Coolant Change
Hello all,
Time to change coolant. Can someone tell me how to drain the engine block as using the plug at bottom right of rad only drains some of the system. Help much appreciated. Thanks

In the Audi manual the only ref. I can find is to remove the hose from the rear of the block that feeds the heater.
Hope that helps.

Had a look at Vadis today and the hose to the bottom of the rad from the thermostat on the block looks like the lowest point on the block.
If you take it off the rad it should drain the rad and block, although the thermostat will be closed if the engine is cold, so it may be better if you can do it while the block is hot. I'm looking at changing mine in the near future so will see if it works. All the best.

Yes I've done my timing belts and have all the tools to do it.
The timing marks are very vague so I made my own before taking the old belts off. It's a bit of a hassle but not difficult. When it came to timing the pump my marks were about 1mm retarded and she didn't want to start. I moved it to 1mm advanced and it was fine. As the belt settled it tends to move retarded so after a few miles I rechecked it and moved it advanced a bit. Whereas before it smoked on hard acceleration, now there is almost no smoke and on the last MOT passed the test with flying colours whereas the previous one only just passed. Fuel consumption on a run is 50+, tank to tank, so I must have got it right. If you want to borrow the tools you'r welcome for the cost of postage; to Linconshire it was about £5, not sure for Skye. Regards. No I haven't had any codes read as I haven't had no symptoms come up and as a Scot object to paying dealers fees to connect to a laptop for two mins.!!!!

Hi, there's a drain tap on the front of the engine which is hard to get to but which drains most of the coolant. Regards.

Thanks BillB. As with most things Volvo why do they hide the things you need to get at? Approx. where is it situated?

Hi, It's on the front side of the engine around half-way along IIRC. VERY hard to see and get to, it's underneath the inlet manifold. You're looking for a downward pointing drain tap which is opened and closed with an open-ended, possibly ring spanner. I guess you could use the bottom hose but that's hard to get to as well. Regards.
