Default V70 Dog guard gas struts or springs

The dog guard in my 2008 V70 doesn't stay folded up against the roof when not in use which is a pain when loading. It seems the struts that hold it up there have failed. It's a solid Volvo dog rack (not the luggage net that some people claim is a dog guard) with struts on each end. My questions are as follows...
1. Are the struts springs or gas
2. Can they be repaired
3. Is there a supplier anyone can recommend that will keep me out of my local main dealer?
4. How do I actually remove the dog guard? It seems immoveable.
Many thanks in advance for helpful suggestions.

The gas springs are available from dealer or various online places. I think the P/N is 9481274. But there may be different ones for the different designs of guard, though I doubt it.

Gas struts are cheap from volvo dealer. Don't buy ebay units. Massively marked up. They're about £25 ish.

BTW the part number is on the ones on the guard so check them before you buy. And yes go to dealer.

His dogs are still in orbit after being ejected on a long stretch of the M25. that was Britain's first successful space launch - never mind the Cornwall debacle.

Yes. They work fine but are dimensionally a bit chunkier and the gas pressure is a bit high. But, good value.
