Default D5 injector going bad?

Hello everyone,

First time posting here, though this forum has proven very helpful with the many little problems I encounter with my (beloved yet high maintenance) XC70 D5 AWD 185 from 2007 (MY2008).

What I have noticed since a few weeks:

- engine has been running a little rough
- loss of power
- permanent vibrations in the steering wheel (all engine mounts are recent and in good shape)
- consumption has gone down on the highway (better mpg than before) but far worse when in town
- if I rev it up, the engine feels like it could choke when going back to idle (with interior lights dimming for a second)
- on one occasion, it even sounded like it was running on 4 cylinders!
- engine is smoother when cold
- have had twice an error code for the EGR P040938. Nothing was clogged as I had cleaned it a year ago, managed to actuate everything but the cooler bypass valve (no noise to be heard).
- a couple of times, the engine was perfectly smooth when I started it cold, but when I turned it off and back on, it was rough.

I do have VIDA on my computer, but not DICE. I use ThinkDiag, which is quite impressive for a 50€ OBD reader. But I have tried taking the injectors' measurements with it, and the values don't seem to be conclusive: they all range widely from one attempt to another, and all are out of specs. For instance cylinder 2 ranges from 0.68 to 1.35.
What I can notice out of 5 tests is that Cyl 2 and 3 are always +, and the others are always -.

I have no idea what is causing the engine to run like that. So, happy to read your inputs!
Thanks,
Ed

DiCE is the cable and associated firmware. Without it, having VIDA on your computer isn't going to help you as you cannot plug the computer into the car.

Of course. I just meant to give some details on the tools I have at hand.
And reading again my post, I realise that it might not be an injector, an issue with the EGR might make more sense. But then why did it feel like it ran on 4 cylinders...?
And according to another thread, it would appear that there is no EGR cooler bypass valve on cars with an automatic gearbox?! That would explain the absence of noise when I tried to actuate it.
Completely lost, if anyone has any idea, please let me know.

get the dice unit or a mongoose cable to connect to vida its more than diagnostics you can read live data and look at the operation of components this will help you narrow down your problem. try doing a leak back test on your injectors .
