I'm not after a sports SUV, but having test driven a few similar cars from the class over the last couple of weeks, I certainly wouldn't mind a little more refinement, and a bit of extra umph for over taking would be nice. I love the XC90 for its immense practicality, looks and comfort, but wish it had the extra performance similar to the competition.

I agree with you, but then I think all cars are underpowered

I'm with you. I have a V6 petrol. I have had 6 cylinder diesels and petrols before, as well as 4 pot petrols and diesels.

The 4 pot in the Q5 (and other Audis) is about as good as they come (and in my opinion better than the D4 /5 in Volvos for refinement) but the Q7 is so much better for having a very good 6 cylinder diesel. Its not all about performance - the refinement is better too. But the smooth nature of the engine better suits the car.

And it is why, despite the looks, a Q7 or Disco 5 would be ahead of the Xc90 for me.

If I wanted a performance SUV it would be an SQ7 - with 8 cylinder diesel....

Why in your post is it 4 "pot" and yet 6/8 "cylinder" ?

Got to laugh D5 underpowered. Mine in dynamic mode goes like a rocket and has left many hot hatches at the lights. Even in comfort mode it’s got bags of torque. Driving to Italy up steep motorway inclines is effortless. Maybe the guys on here who think it’s underpowered need to buy a cayenne or Macan. Plus the xc90 goes round bends far better than a Q7

I drive a BMW X5 40D. Trust me, the D5 is slow by comparison!

My wife has just ordered a XC60, lovely car but sadly can't match the refinement of the N57 straight six. However, the volvo feels more special on the inside.
