At each side of the radio (from the front view) you should be able to see a vertical bar about 0.1 in wide. Using a coin or similar push each one in until you hear a click. When you then release it and take your coin away, the handle should come out part way. Pull the handles fully out and then pull the radio unit forward with a steady pressure. The whole unit should then come out followed by the wiring attachments.

Can't comment on your overheating cassettes though.

Do you have the user manual for this radio?

Hi,
If you shine a light at the two slots you should see a metal clip on the outside of the radio. You need to fish with a couple of small flat screw drivers to pull the clips in towards the radio. Then using the cassette slot pull the radio towards you and out.
You should see the clips fairly easily with a bright torch and just pull them in towards the radio. Once you know where they are it is quite easy to get it out. Don't forget the radio and surround come out as one.

Cheers.
