Default 16T Turbo for sale.

Hi all,

Simon (Sholtby) kindly posted a message on the 850/70 forum about a 16T turbo for sale. I have spoken to the seller, and have first refusal on this item. I have a photo of the Turbo, and it looks the same as the one on my 855R, only it has a cranked exhaust casting,ie my Downpipe wont fit. The design actually looks more efficient than mine!!

I have some questions that I would be very grateful if anyone could answer them:-

1. Will it fit my Manifold?

2. Will there be any improvement over my current Turbo (Also 16T)?

3. Will I be able to buy a Downpipe that will fit this Turbo and my 855?

4. What model of Volvo is this Turbo designed to fit..V70R??

If I get this one, then my current 16T will go on my T5, along with spare manifold and exhaust system.

Nigel,

I have both earlier and later stainless downpipes with special cat at £580 plus VAT delivered from UK stock.

The later design is more efficient as the spent gasses are turning in that larger casting rather than the smaller casting on the older turbo, which is then followed by a tighter turn in the earlier downpipe.

Regards, Don.Norchi.

1. Yes
2. Slight
3. Yes
4. All C/S/V70 T5 models from 1999+ have this turbo.

I really wouldn't bother if your current turbo is ok...

Putting the bigger turbo on the T5 won't give measureably more power unless you also alter the boost level...but it will alter the spooling characteristics (if its bigger it'll probably start spooling at higher rpm), albeit probably not much! If its pocket money, then its probably worth it, otherwise...find a much bigger turbo for the R, then do the swap ;)

cheers

James

Thanx for the advice James. i was in two minds whether to bother or not. I've paid only £150 for it, so it's worth having around!!

It also means that when i buy my new downpipe, I can buy the angled version, so an upgrade at a later date will only involve buying the Turbo and a re-map.

As far as putting the old 16T on the T5 is concerned. It would be an economical decision, as the Cat is knackered, and I have two cats/downpipes for a 16T. I believe the 15G downpipe is different.

Always good to have spares. You wanna keep your eyes peeled for something bigger...19T ish. Holset turbos from diesel trucks are very popular in the states...:) £150 is a fair price, can't complain there! Hmm...you could buy a whole car like mine for that though!!

cheers

James

Today the decision was made for sure!! I was tinkering with the T5, changing engine mounts, and removed the inlet pipe from the Turbo. To say the shaft has a small amount of play is an understatement!!

So, very soon the R manifold, Turbo and downpipe will be fitted. I'll let you all know the outcome. There probably wont be any difference whatsoever!!
