16T vs 19T
Hi chaps and chapesses,
I am replacing the turbo on my '99 V70 T5. I'm choosing between the 16T (which is currently fitted) and 19T. One thing is holding me back from the 19T - the idea that it will be more laggy and less available over the rev range. Of course, higher power would be the welcome tradeoff :-) Can anyone contribute experiences that might help me choose between the two? RE: 16T vs 19T
Alastair, what's wrong with the 18T? It was fitted to the '98 V70R Manual - I suppose you can do the half mile instead of the quarter mile at Bruntingthorpe if you fit the 19T - you will then have time for the turbo to spool up! .....only joking :+

RE: 16T vs 19T
You'll need to pay for a rechip with the 19T which is £100 if you already have a Rica'd car.
Where does the power come in with a 19T? I think its about 4k revs. I remember one guy on this forum saying his car with a 15g was nippier than with a 16T. Simon |

RE: 16T vs 19T... vs 18T
Been thinking about this some more.
I don't spend much time at high speeds - and until the car regularly goes to trackdays, that's likely to stay the case. So for practicality maybe the 16T (or 18T as Iain suggests) is the way to go. It just feels wrong to take the 16T off and put a new 16T back on! Alastair ---------------------------- http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/photopos...357v70-sig.jpg |

RE: 16T vs 19T
I didn't notice much difference in lag, but in heinsight (spelling) I would stay with a 16T - car will seem, as said, more nippy.
Power comes in a little earlier than 4k, about 3.5k say. BUT when you have it spining, nothing can beat the overtaking surge available ! RE: 16T vs 19T
My 850r (auto) originally had a 15g a a rica chip and would boost to peaks of 17psi and fade to 14/15 on a medium temp day.
I got hold of an 18t for £140 of ebay and unlike the 19t the 18t could just be swapped with the 15g. even though im still using the 15g map\ecu i find that the car performs much better overall. when i changed the turbo i fitted the reverse IC and replaced all my vac lines aswell as calibrating the wastegate. Most of this helped offset the added lag of the 18t. When i took my car with the 18t to santa pod the 0-60ft was on average .1 more but i gained time back up top and could pull on justins(v-t5) manual rica'ed 850 t5 with all its recent new bits. if i had had some more strip i would have put a few more lengths on. The main difference with the 18t is the fact that it can hold 17/18psi to redline whereas the 15g would fade to 14/15psi. Im sure with a remap i could have the 18t running another few psi as the 17/18psi is set by the 15g map.As i run a tight wastegate i find the boost actually rises as i approach redline. The 18t is also less affected by hot summers days and i find it spools smoother and isnt as harsh lower down the revs. I fitted the 18t myself over 2 days in the hot sun and got sunburnt, but i wouldnt go back. A few other points to remember: Rica(volvotuning) dont do off the shelf maps for the 18t(they use the 16t map), but they do for the 19t. So you will find better gains with the 19t as its supported. The 18t flows 485cfm and the 19t flows 500cfm. the 15g flows 428cfm and the 16t 435cfm. so a you can see the 15 and 16t are one end and the 18 and 19 the other. some people say the 18t spools in a more controlled way to the 19t, if you look at the flow maps that would make sense as the 15/16 and 18 maps look the same whereas the 19t is very diff. if you want to fit a 19t you will need a new dp. Hope that helps. Bobcat.

RE: 16T vs 19T
Thanks Bobcat that's very informative.
I thought I could fit a 19T without problems as I have an angled outlet (oo-er) - according to this list I could fit 18T or 19T I think (although mine is a FWD not an AWD, and I don't know what "4-vxl aut" means, maybe it's talking about the gearbox): http://www.swededemon.com/turbo/turbolist.html I would def prefer the 18T over the 19T if it fits directly (and incidentally VT does now do an 18T map apparently). Is there a difference between AWD and FWD turbo fitments though? 16T or 18T... that seems pretty much a straight choice now between "do I want better response and more power earlier" or "do I want to romp away from everyone else at higher speeds"! I think I might go for the first option... still deciding... Thanks again. Alastair ---------------------------- http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/photopos...357v70-sig.jpg |

RE: 16T vs 19T
for some reason i thought you had an 850! looking at that list if you have a 97/98 car then you have a straight dp and if you have a 99/00 then you have the angled dp.
hopefully you have an angled one then you can get the 19t as i think its cheaper than the 18t and its supported.

RE: 16T vs 19T
Yes it's an angled outlet, 19T is definitely an option.
What's the rule of thumb regarding ambient temperatures and turbo sizes... I'd guess the warmer the ambient, the larger turbo you need for the same performance? Maybe I should just get an intercooler spray :-) A ---------------------------- http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/photopos...357v70-sig.jpg |
