Finished Full size install,

Finished covered floor panel with old handle installed

The new lid from the underside, 9mm with strategic stiffeners glued and pinned on

this 17 inch rim goes in the well nice with the standard jacking kit etc, to prevent it vibrating down and getting jammed in the well i sat it on an expanding foam cushion which i made by packing the rim to the right height to support the boot floor and after wrapping the tyre in tape to prevent sticking i squirted in the foam, could probably benefit from a bit of a trim.

That's very smart. Post covir-19 I'll consider that, if I can find a reasonably priced fifth matching alloy. What was the significance of the foam under the spare? Will it not fit without? I'd have imagined every mm of depth in the wheel well was vital. With the new floor, how much vertical space do you have above the full sized spare?

Is it the hinge for the hinged lift of the floor that intrudes into the head space of the full sized spare wheel. How tight is the head space shortfall?

On mine if you lifted the flap it had a storage tray underneath, i did not measure the dimension, but it wasnt a lot, are you thinking a narrower wheel?

No not at all. I currently have the skinny temporary spare wheel in preference to the can of tyre slime and an injector pump but I've always had full size spare wheels and the thought of being far from home and dependent upon finding a tyre shop in places that I don't know and may not even speak the language is madness compared to changing the wheel and driving on as if nothing had happened. I think it's the one thing that Volvo got 100% wrong. I bet their customer base in the north of Sweden don't rely on their stupid pump and slime in arctic winter climates!

I'm trying to work out what it is that protrudes down over the wheel well and drops below the head space above the FSSW. Is it so tight that there is no way of using the hinged original floor? I think your DIY floor looks great but is it the only way to make space above the wheel well to accommodate the FSSW?

From memory. i felt you could use the existing floor if it was altered. I felt this would be a handicap at resale so rather than set about it with power tools i put it in my garage loft and made a new one, just leaving my options open. You could always whip off a wheel and trial fit.

It's not limited to Volvo, all manufacturers now see this as a benefit to costs and weight saving. The majority of owners gain no benefit from having a full size spare sat in the boot that will never get used and will ultimately perish with age - just ask how many people still know how to change a wheel as most will now just call roadside assistance (FYI I can change a wheel but I would probably still do the latter!)
But I take your point why they make the tyre well too shallow.

I've not been able to access my boot as it's full of wheels & tyres at the moment to check. Does the recess for the flip up grocery holder protrude under the boot floor?
And have you included the reinforcing ribs & boot floor handle?

The foam supports the tyre and stops it getting wedged into the well as it tapers to towards the bottom, it also offers the wheel upto a height the lends support to the boot floor

I have had cars previous and had to use the runflat capabilty to return home and then that tyre is finished, also had to drive a considerable distance within the speed restriction the deflated tyre imposed,no fun at all, my wife is the main user of the car and we have practiced the tyre change procedure and equiped the car with a long breaker bar and a socket, she could if needs must sort it out. The bit that phases her is the dead lift of the wheel out of the well, so i tied some cord to it with a handle at the right length to allow her to do this.
