Volvo s40 bifuel problem plz help
Hi
Im new here so i hope im doing this right. I brought a volvo s40 1.8 bifuel 2002 a week ago, The car had been parked up for 2 months and before that was working perfect on petrol and lpg. its runs perfect on petrol but soon as i switch to lpg i can hear the solenoid in the tank and then the car cuts out. if i keep the car at 3000 revs then switch it to lpg it works but soon as the revs drops to less than 2000 the car cuts out. when on the motorway i was doing about 70 i switched it to lpg the car kept running but became sluggish and started to misfire then i switched back to petrol and it runs fine on petrol. i did give it a garage to have a look at today and he claimed that these are old systems and you cant parts for it so its not worth getting it repaired. didnt say what the problem was but o be honest i dont think he had a clue. any ideas guys? |

Answered your other thread, but there's more info on this one.
I'd now be guessing that the LPG distributor is clogged. There's a cheap 'fix' which involves disconnecting the LPG pipe after the gas filter and pouring half a bottle of STP injector cleaner down the pipe - reconnect and get the car to switch to gas. It will stall. Then leave the cleaner in for several hours. After that restart the engine and activate the gas, it will splutter and cough until the dregs of the cleaner are burned off. Hopefully, it will then settle down and run properly. If you need to clean the distributor, look for one on my threads a little lower down the board, I've put a link on to some good instructions. |

V40 bifuel problem
I have a 2002 52 plate 1.8 bifuel that I have owned for about 6 months, all has been fine with the gas but a few weeks ago the engine cut out whilst driving on gas, I restarted and all was ok. After stopping for around half hour I tried to restart on gas but would not switch over and since then every time I press the lpg I can hear the solenoid at the back clicking but it will not switch over at all.
I'm thinking of trying the tip with the STP injector fluid but I'm not sure that I have located the LPG distributor, could you shed any light on this. Apart from that it's not been a bad car, incidentallty I worked at Nedcar in the Netherlands for 8 years (on paint rectification) where these cars were made along with the carisma so I know first hand the build quality was pretty good. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Regards Steve |

A complete failure to switch over to LPG, after hearing the rear tank solenoid click, might suggest that the vapourizer solenoid hasn't opened the LPG valve to the vapourizer. You won't hear that click due to engine noise. The solenoids run warm/hot and over time split the casing and fail. However a split casing doesn't automatically mean it's failed. If it's a factory fit LPG system the vapourizer is under the air filter box on the right hand side of the engine bay.
