740 Estate for sale - Spares or repairs
Hi Guys,
Up for sale is my dad's 740 Estate. This was originally a Volvo demo car so had hardly any miles on before my dad bought it from them. He has had her for 20 years! The reason for sale is that we have just bought a D5 V70 to replace it. She is a base model 740 2.3 Manual with 162k on the clock. The milometer/speedo however stopped working properly a good three years ago (it works when it wants to, probably half of the time), so the mileage will be more than that, but not by too much as she hasn't been used very much in the past few years. She has been a very good car to us over the years, she has been serviced every year (i'm sure my dad will be able to dig up invoices). A couple of years ago I think the cambelt went, I remember the engine was repaired to the sum of £800 odd, new valves, new head etc. The gearbox was also replaced at around 120k miles. Now the bad points - I believe the garage messed around with the carb a couple of years ago and she ran a bit funny for a while, but recently she has been ok. Secondly the nearside front brake caliper is sticking, so we bought one and were going to pop it on and get her MOT'd (It has only just run out), but now can't be bothered as the new car is here, need the space etc. It hasn't been in for a retest and failed by the way! Thirdly, she isn't the prettyest girl any more, she needs a damn good clean inside, the rooflining is shot, there is some bubbling on the tailgate and some rust around the side indicator on the wing, two wheeltrims have been stolen, there is a small scrape on the nearside wing etc. You are most welcome to come over and check her out, just send me a PM to arrange a time. We think the best way for her to go is for spares, no doubt there are plenty of useful parts on her to help other 740s. There is a towbar, dog guard etc. The roofbars we will be keeping however. The numberplate is going on the new car, so I have had some new plates made up with the original age related registration which I will pop on for the buyer. Located in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. Would anyone like to give her a new home for £120? She has just over half a tank of fuel as well |

Hey Tim, make me an offer, you never know We just need her out the way now! More than welcome to pop over and take a look
P.S. It is a condition of sale that the buyer has to show me pics etc if they tidy her up and keep her on the road - would be nice to see her used instead of stripped for parts Last edited by yoda960; Dec 12th, 2009 at 11:53. |

Its tempting, but too close to Christmas I'm afraid.
What did she fail her MOT, was it just the sticky caliper? What I'm thinking is there might be a fair amount of interest, but there's the logistics of collecting a car with no MOT. I know you said you can't be bothered to sort her out, but if you did get her through her test, you could raise the price accordingly and it would make it a lot more practical for someone to pick her up. |

If you book it in for an MOT local to you you can drive it there, aslong as its insured.

Thats how I got my 945 home, although the test is slightly different over there, but the same rules apply lol

I believe the MOT rules are that if it fails, as long as you are driving it to a 'pre-booked place of repair' AND the previous MOT hasn't expired yet (ie you got it tested and it failed before its existing MOT had expired) then you're ok.
When I sold my Vectra to my mate who is a mechanic after it failed it's test, I was driving it to a pre-booked place of repair, in that my mate was going to repair it and he was expecting me. |
