Removing steering wheel (Amazon)

Once the central nut has been removed (the easy bit), short of using a BFH, how do I get the steering wheel off?

I'm not that fussed about the wheel (or the steering column for that matter - this is on my spares car!) but I'm trying to remove the dashboard & indicator switch without damaging them.

Are there any additional fixings for the wheel?

Can the joint in the steering column be undone and pulled trough the bulkhead?

Either way, I'm after the quickest method!!

Any car I've ever had, to remove the wheel I sit in the seat with my knees behind the wheel, and simultaneously pull the top with one hand and pull/push the bottom with my knees. Clout the threaded column with a hefty hammer, and the shock frees the splines.

That sounds about right, and much easier than some of the 'alternative' methods I was planning! Hope it doesn't take too long - I have lots of bits to remove tomorrow, which is my last chance before it goes to the crusher next week... :-(

I know that I am too late to help you but this is a tip for others. I did mine by taking a thick piece of steel about 4 in long and 1.5 in wide. I drilled a pair of holes in it that correspond to the two large tapped holed in the steering wheel (you can see them when the horn press trim is removed). Position the piece of steel across the central pole of the steering column and put two bolts through the holes in the piece of steel then screw them into the threaded holes in the steering wheel. This forces the piece of steel down on the central pole and pulls the steering wheel up the splines. If you have not done this you will not have a clue what I am talking about but, next time you dismantle the steering wheel it will all make sense.
