Advice on XC60 variant
I’d like to return to Volvo and get an XC60 either 2.4D or D5.
I have had S60s in 2.4D and D5 and love the D5244 engine for its torque. I’d like to go for the D5 AWD for its horses and torque but would I miss much going for the DRIVe variant even though it’s only 163 bhp or another variant? Are the later engines better? Advice appreciated

I would suggest the question that you need to answer for yourself first is do you want/need AWD?
If you don't think you need it then the later models with the D4 190 VEA 4 cylinder engine aren't too far off the D5 AWD's in terms of performance, but they so suffer a little with torque steer if you work them hard. If you want an auto version - the D4 2WD VEA is the only variant with the later 8-speed gearbox. If you want AWD then you will have a lovely Volvo 5-cylinder engine and 6-speed auto or manual, the later D4 190's are adequate, but if you tow or like a quick turn of speed then the D5 AWD is the way to go. The best engines are 2016MY onwards (i.e. those cars sold after July 2015) but the differences are small. I personally wouldn't bother with the non VEA 2WD models.

Your right I don’t need AWD but on past experience the D5 has the best engine variant.
You refer to post 2015 engines. Is that the D5244T22 or D5244T20? What effect does twin turbos have? Budget wise I could go up to 18k

For 18k I would hold out for a MY16 or MY17 D5 SE LUX with sensible mileage - but you should try a 2WD VEA version as well as they are a good drive. There seems to be a lot of late model manual cars around at the moment,

I believe both the 205 & 215 BHP engines are twin turbo the earlier 185 and below are single turbos. When the 205 BHP engine came out there where quite a lot of changes over and above the twin turbo.
More information can be found here for the 205 https://www.media.volvocars.com/glob...releases/18756 and for the 215 https://www.media.volvocars.com/glob...releases/37375 |
