Default 1.8 Variable valve solenoid Q.

Hi all,1st post...as is normal for 1st posts ,I've a problem !!

Bought a 1.8 S40 yesterday for the Family hack ,got it halfway home(stopped for petrol) and the things developed a rattle on idle from what turns out to be the variable valve solenoid.Done a bit of digging about and one thing i read was the vernier pulley is likely to be the main problem.
Does the vernier pulley definately need changing aswell as the solenoid?Obviously I've contacted the dealer i bought it from,I just want to get all the correct info before he starts trying to fob me off with b.s.

cheers,Colin

These things are known to be a problem on cars that have not received fresh oil often enough- the valve is both prone to gumming up and sticking from varnish, as well as the -tiny- oil passage blocking.

It's usually the valve that needs changing.

What is the service history like?!

Tim..

It will be the pulley that needs replacing, that the bit that rattles. Quick check pull off the solenoid connector when its rattling if the noise goes its the pulley you will need.
