I did a bit of experimentation with spare springs, cords and bits of wire I had, and came up with this as a really good solution Dave:

... it is pretty unobtrusive and gives just the right force to balance the boot lid.

I'm not sure there was much wrong with the original gas struts - I think the issue was down to the extra weight of the boot spoiler upsetting the balance.

I think this is the long term solution :-)

Looks good Alan - do my eyes decieve me or is there a convenient hole in the hinge arm just above where the ram connects? Thinking maybe you could hook the bungees through that and then bring the loop back to the spring if so?

I suspect you're right about the spoiler being the fly in the ointment in terms of the strength of the rams/struts, intereseting there's a convenient point to mount that extension spring, perhaps how it was done on older models?

There is indeed a convenient hole in the arm Dave, unfortunately it is a little too small to pass both bungee hooks through and there is not enough metal around it to drill it out a bit bigger. I may look around for a shorter, stiffer bungee so it would only need one hook each end.

I suspect the convenient bracket at the other end is for a strap to secure the spare wheel, but I don't know where the other end goes.

Good fortune,

Alan

Is the hole big enough to pass a short bolt through held in place with a Nyloc nut and with penney washers either side of the hinge?

Alternatively the same bungee could be used by sliding the hook down from the end and tying a new knot in it to shorten it. Maybe use half the bungee each side to make it look neater.

With the spare wheel, i know now why that convenient bracket is there - should be a strap secured within the spare wheel well that comes up andhooks into that slot. There is a buckle that is adjustable to hold the wheel securely.

Whether a convenient bracket exists on the other side as well is another matter as i think the fuel filler neck is hidden there.

Ah, so that is what that little bracket is for, I thought it must be something like that. The strap is missing on the RB, so I use a bungee (as you may notice in the photo); it works fine. You are right, there is no bracket on the right side.

The hole in the arm would be big enough to take a bolt (about 5mm) - I'm thinking I could fasten a D buckle there and run the bungee through that.

I did think of just cutting the bungee in half and re-securing it, which would work but would of course would halve the spring rate, and therefore the force aiding the gas strut. It is just about right at the moment, so what I would need is a stiffer bungee.

The set up is more or less right now Dave, entirely due to your lateral thinking. I also think it is in keeping with the RB's ethos (not quite 'rat-bike', but not entirely conventional either). I will tidy it up a bit when I find the right shaped pieces of metal or rubber - just as you suggest.

I was thinking about a D-shackle as well but i don't think they'd be long enough.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Long-D-sh...m/113606236087

Even on the long one, the bolt is 5mm and length "L" in the diagram is only 37mm :

If that's enough to put the bungee cord through and then hook them into the slot/bracket in place of that extension spring (the extra length from the D shackle may make them slightly looser) or even on the spring as it is if there's still enough tension in the bungee then that would make it more reliable and neaten it up.

I know you don't want to go "bespoke" so the ethos of the RB is kept but a reliable work-around is better than "that'll do". I was watching Guy Martin when he went to India and apparently they have a word that sounds like "ga-jar" which means roughly speaking "that'll do" but only just.

That is exactly it Dave - I've ordered 3 - they look as if they might be handy here and there).

I'm happy to make everything look neat and tidy ion the RB, although as you know I'm not aiming for a restoration (and I think that would be the wrong thing for the RB). We might end up with a more bespoke finish (but along the same lines).

Alan.

PS. I have just picked up Dan from school in the RB (I normally use the Porsche) and caused some embarrassment - never again is the message; evidently 40 year old Volvos are not for trendy 16 year olds to be seen in :-)

Hmmm, is the school within walking distance Alan?

I had a feeling you'd order more than one, i did the same when i bought one to hold Sashas spare lead on one of the tie-down hooks in the back of mine. Only use it when she's in season, i put her normal extending lead on and then while i'm sorting myself out ready for her walkies i lassoo her with the spare lead so she can't be a brazen hussy if she sees a boy dog....................

Can't for the life of me remember what i did with the spare one now though!

You have me thinking now Dave. Perhaps one of the D shackles each end of the arrangement, then I could manufacture a little adjustable rod to connect a shorter bungee or a spring. It might look quite neat - I'll start looking for bits of metal that might be about the right size and shape.

:-)

That should work nicely Alan, been trying to think of ways to improve/neaten that idea but can't think of anything.
