V70 3.0 t6 se lux
Hi all
Currently keep finding myself looking at this beast of a V70 on autotrader, is there anything I should be worried about (apart from MPG and road tax) that should concern me ie expensive faults, problems, repairs that may crop up on this model at age and mileage. Also the price thats being asked £7770 does this look about right? Or do I stick with my 55K 2003 S80 that i've had for 3 years and proving to be very reliable (touch wood). Cheers Bruce https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif...del=V70&page=1 Last edited by Bruce80; Jun 11th, 2018 at 12:54. |

You do tell us the age and mileage of your current car but you don't give these details about the V70 and then you ask an opinion on the asking price. In the circumstances that makes it hard to say.

I've got a 2008 (58 plate) T6.
Lovely engine, smooth gearbox if looked after but a little dim and will change down way too many gears if you floor it in 'D'. It's a delightful cruising car and isn't going to win any races in the corners. Things to be mindful of/service: Gear box oil (at 77k it could do with being changed if it hasn't had a change already), haldex oil and filter (same as gear box), rear suspension front bushings (if they've not been done at 77k, they'll almost certainly need doing - search for squeaks coming from the rear of the car). Engine doesn't have a cambelt - it's chain driven so no stress there as long as servicing has been carried out properly. Brake fluid, coolant etc will need changing soon at that age too. In real life the fuel consumption is bad. Like really bad. 24mpg if you're driving carefully around town/back roads/stop start/hills. 20 - 22mpg if you're Colin McRae. If you're careful and sit at 65 - 74 on cruise you'll get 30 - 35mpg on long runs. 50mph seems to be most economical. Below that and it's crap and then 55 and above to 74 and it doesn't get any worse. From 76-77 onwards, there's a noticed drop off. Tax, yes expensive. Other thing to consider, these cars have a very niche market, so if you want to flog it quickly and easily I doubt it'll happen. Buy with the intention of keeping. I love mine BTW. Very comfortable and relaxing on the motorway and the poke certainly helps make driving safer and easier. Hope that helps! |

So its not a car to be taken in to our local garage for service/any works etc (even though I've used them for 15 years, always been happy with them) ?, fortunately we have a local Volvo specialist W A Pye and Sons probably the safe option? I've worked out it would cost me an extra £80 per month for increased road tax and petrol based on 24MPG which I can live with, might be a bit optimistic the 24MPG though by the sound of it although I do get the average MPG out of my petrol S80. Didn't know it was chain driven so that's a plus and was aware of the need for gear box oil changes, heavy on bushes etc. Point taken about it being a niche market although if I buy it would be as a keeper, still unsure on the price of it though it follows that it's a niche market for the trader as well, they've already dropped it £200. Finally had the angle gear issues been sorted by 2008. Thanks Bruce |

No worries.
I take mine to a local garage that I trust for general servicing. Anything Volvo specific or that requires knowledge of the vehicles I take to an independent Volvo place (like the rear front bushings or electronic gremlins). 24mpg might be optimistic –*it certainly depends how you drive it. You'll be looking to fill up at or just before 350 miles of driving if you're not careful, 400 if you drive normally and could probably squeeze 500 if you're really really cautious. I believe angle gear issues are on the older P2 cars, so not to worry on a P3 V70. Obvs it can still go but I think it's unlikely. The winter just gone proved how awesome the awd system is. I had new-ish summer tyres and had no problems accelerating or turning in deep snow. Stopping required more caution though! Just check your awd works (wet grassy field and a hoof-full does the trick!)... They're nice cars and the turbo 6-cylinder is a peach. Plenty of low down grunt and it really does keep pulling right the way through the revs... it's a shame the fuel gauge moves as quickly as the speedo does! |

I believe the T6 is the only P3 V70 with AWD, which in my opinion makes it desirable. If they'd done a AWD version of the D5 SE Lux, that would be perfect, but sadly they don't exist with the P3.
The price seems a bit high. Compared to other models, it's likely you're paying more for the engine, and given the economy and auto box, it's questionable whether that's worth paying a premium for. The AWD is definitely worth paying for, although in my opinion the combination of AWD, auto gearbox and petrol don't make it seem worth £7.7k - but that is only my opinion and I worry about fuel economy. If you want AWD, have you looked at XV70s in that price range, e.g. with a D5 ? Personally I think the V70 looks nicer than the XC70, which makes this T6 a very nice wolf in sheep's clothing, and worth more than the equivalent spec XC70. It just seems a lot to pay for something that will be expensive to run.

Having said that about the price, I've had a look at other V70s (see below), and perhaps that is a valid price for the spec of car....

Strangely enough we have a caravan and its sited at the the top of a grassy field in Wales, even more strangely its often wet my S80 does a very good impression of a well and truly stuck muddy car |
