The F-Type was a straight-4 automobile engine from Renault. ... Variant of the F3R was sold from 1992 in the Volvo 400-series as B20F F3R

yes reliable and lots of torque , but not a revving type of engine , it uses the diesel crankshaft with the stroke stretched to the limit .
A few suffer oil consumption problems and had piston rings replaced when new under a limited recall but it wasnt an effective cure . That was the year Renault fell out with volvo about 1993 so perhaps those had renault pistons instead of the volvo specification ones ! Have a look at a spark plug if it looks clean and white no problem if it has grey crusty deposits it may have higher oil consumption , which isnt too bad a problem

Not sure if it's a myth or any truth to it but something to do with a change in the engine or having recall work done would have a green dipstick and the oil drinking engine will have a red dipstick?!?!?

My 2.0 had a green dipstick and it drank lots of oil but then so do all my motors. I do like to rev the nuts off them

I thought the green/red dipstick thing was something a few manufacturers tried to identify cars suitable for unleaded during the pre-cat period.
(I suspect also that it backfired and ended up with people putting antifreeze in their engines, because "that's green").

The red dipstick engines had extra oil nozzles to cool te pistons from underneath. This design flaw caused these engines to burn lots of oil. The green dipstick from I think '93+, are without those oil nozzles. Those have a more normal oil consumption and are much searched after. Originally they are Renault engines, but Volvo had Porsche redisign the pistons, heads, (turbo) inlet manifold and I believe the ignition. So they are a lot different than the original Renault engine. Volvo also worked together with Lotus. Lotus designed the chassis for the 480, that's why those little beauties are like glued to the road!
