Crunching/grinding in fourth gear
Finally getting some road tests in before the big 5000 mile rally that starts on Wednesday. Everything is working well right now except I'm getting a grinding going into fourth gear. All other gears shift smoothly.
I drove it Saturday and it crunched going into reverse and wouldn't go into fourth at all unless I really jammed it. We did three things - adjust the pushrod from the clutch slave, tightened down the shifter and filled up the transmission with more fluid. We put it in from the side plug until no more would go in. Is that enough? After we did those things, reverse shifts great and I can get into fourth, just not easily. I'm afraid of 5000 miles and constant gear changes may be to much for the transmission if it is grinding like this. Is there anything else I can adjust or is it synchros worn out? Perhaps try double clutching and finding a good rev range to get it in gear? |

crunching 4th gear
Hi,
Any clutch issue would normally show itself when selecting reverse. You should have plenty of oil in there. I had this issue with 4th gear. Could change smoothly and quietly into 4th if the revs were no higher than 2000 rpm. I took the whole unit in for reconditioning. They found the 4th gear selector fork was twisted / bent. Chris. |

Crunching 4th gear
Hi,I think I bought that gearbox from Chris,as those were the symptoms he told me about at the time.I just double declutch into 4th gear and it is really sweet.
I,ve done about 8000 mls on it so far, using it every day,so there's no reason why you would have any problems with yours. Mine also crunches into reverse if I do it too quickly, but is fine if done slowly. Regards,Andy. |
