I too have 18" wheels and Pirelli P Zeros but I found them OK for summer tyres trying to cope with snow and ice - never got stuck once. I did get a set of Goodyear Ultragrip 7+ 16". They make a big improvement to ride comfort and tyre noise, but steering goes pretty wooly.

You do feel much more confident on the winter tyres. Remember to let your insurance company know.

Thinking of getting a set of winter tyres this year, I drive down to devon 1-2 times a month. Managed it last year with a bit of luck but with all the hills down there I don't fancy sticking it in a wall or something for the sake of not spending 600 quid.

That and I almost binned it last year on a small hump near the end of the M5, hit the hump and in the ice felt it going away, was a passenger for a couple of seconds before I caught it (more luck than anything really). Don't fancy that experience again.
