I am new to volvo, and to automatics, I have recently purchased a XC70 D Ocean Race, 2.4 auto. 2005 reg. It has a clunking noise with jerking when driving in slow traffic or at low speeds under 10 mph, approaching traffic lights etc and pulling away. It drives fine once under speed. I asked for a transmission oil change at a recent local service and was told there was no drainage outlet and was referred to a specialist company. Can anyone give some advice - I fear a big bill!
I want to keep the car if I can sort out this problem

Lots of info on here about changing transmission fluid. There is no drain as such you need to suck it out with a vacuum pump. There is a clever way to remove more fluid than what you can "uncleverly" remove, so you need to carry out the operation fewer times.( each time you do the job you improve the quality of the fluid) IIRC good quality fluid is a cherry red (my Volvos are manual's)
If you are happy with spanners in your hands I believe its a relatively simple procedure.
There may be something else wrong with the transmission, but this would be a starting point and cures over half of this type of problem.

There are several "how to" on You tube similar to this one

Good luck.

At 2005 I am assuming you have the 163 BHP engine and 5-speed auto (not 6) ?

These gearboxes can give trouble, but a good fluid change can sometimes work wonders. The problem is draining through the drain plug only removed about 40% of the fluid because of what gets trapped in the gearbox guts and torque converter. However there is another way which is much better - search the whole forum for the "Gibbons Method" (this box was used in pretty much all Volvo cars from early 2000's). Remember to use the correct JWS3309 fluid and if you have access to VIDA, get the gearbox adaptation reset.

Check your lower gearbox cantilever steady... notorious for early wear on the small bush, but dead easy to replace and only £30.

Howdy, how confident do you feel with spanners? If you've got the 5-speed auto there certainly is a drain plug! If it's the 6-speed then yeah it's a case of sucking oil from the dipstick and replacing.

If you're happy to change the engine oil on a car & have the 5 speed then I've got good news: the procedure is almost exactly the same! Can talk you through it if searching for "drain and fill jws3309" doesn't find similar threads

I'd check the inner cv joint on the OS driveshaft too, as this proved to be the problem on my 2WD

Bob. thanks for this - i'm ok with spanners but I've not been under a car for decades and have no real way of raising the car up enought to work properly. I'll look up the youtube first.

Tannaton.
You may be right - how do you know if it is a 163 BHP and a 5 speed gear box (its easy to see on a manual!)
What is VIDA? and how can I tell and what is the adaptation? would I ask for in a service?
I'll check out the 'Gibbons method'.
All suggestions help build knowledge.
Thanks

Good to hear it may only cost £30 but I need to read the webpages you included to gen up more.

Hi Blueacid.
As I mentioned to others online - not sure if it is a 5 or 6 speed (yet). when I find out I'll search for the drain plug or the dip stick. If procedures are easy and I know what to do i'll have a go - but need to find out exact details of the car first. I'll look up threads for 'drain and fill jws3309' and see if that helps and where that goes. But may get back to you to talk me through this - I retire in Feb so may have a bit more time to try this myself.
