Default Black smoke on heavy right foot

Well its getting to the mot time two months till then but I have black smoke from the exhaust and heavy right foot but clears after a few seconds then when I give it another boot same thing . I have on warnings on or massage showing runs fine average mpg of 39.2 mpg around town . Been told it could be injectors or a vac leak . 2002 v70 d5 is what I have still a good car so just hope it will pass

Black smoke suggests fueling issue (overfueling, typically). That being said, this section of the forum is for pre-2000 V70s, and the 2000-2007 cars like yours are a completely different kettle of fish.

Check your induction system for leaks. The ECU will be fueling the vehicle on the basis of a measured amount of air. If some of that air escapes then you will be running rich and fuel will be unburnt as there is not enough oxygen for full combustion.

Take it for a run, hard accelration whenever possible, its probably clogged with soot from not being driven hard, 2 or 3 traffic light grand prix should sort it!

mine smokes a wee bit on a heavy right foot, and to pass an mot I take it once warmed up to the morway and let rip in 3rd to the red line.....it smokes like dastardly and muttley
I stay at red line to next morway exit in 3rd, then straight to mot with a red hot decoked engine....passes smoke test every time

on a side note our hose from the turbo we later found had a small slit in it causing the engine management light to come on now and again. Since this has been replaced we have bags of power and far less smoke

I can't speak for those with petrol cars, but my 1998 V70 Tdi belches a bit when I boot it. Soon clears though, and then its fine. I put this down to sedate driving most of the time, carbon building, and maybe a bit of residual oil build up in the turbo which quickly gets burnt up accelerating hard.

Dave..

Not really helpful, but I used to drive BMW 325TDI and 330TDI’s in anger in the fuzz. They both left clouds of black smoke after pootling about then getting a ‘shout’. The 325’s were worse. So maybe a common thing for oil burners ? I’ve always had petrol cars....
