what to check when buying a 2.0 diesel ?
Hi all.
My son is looking at buying a 2010 2.0 s80 diesel and I could do with some assistance. Iam very familiar with volvo petrol engines ( 240 cup s80 ) but no expierence of diesels. So what should I check on the car when I go to look at it ?? Thanks in advance Brendan

First thing to check is whether it's a 4 cylinder badged "2.0D", or a 5 cylinder badger "D3".

That's good it's a D3 then it should be the 5 cylinder Volvo engine.
In response to your original post asking what to check on a 2.0D - if it had the Ford/****roen engine I would have said check if there are any D5's for sale nearby...

thanks
hi
I remember from my Volvo days ( Petrol Engines ) that the PCV system used to get blocked and the way to test it was using a plastic glove over the oil filler cap with the engine running to indicate positive or negative pressure. does the same test apply to the D3 ? thanks in advance brendan

Not really.... by that point that engine (or versions of it) had been in production for over 8 years and it was solid to start with so very well sorted.
I would say usual used car checks apply... check ALL electrics from locks to windows, they're no unreliable but can be expensive to fix if they do give trouble. Check for uneven tyre wear and suspension creaks, knocks etc. Have a search on here, there will be a few model specific checks such as poorly bonded windscreens etc.

Check that the auxiliary belt and tensioner have been changed at recommended time 54 k .
The main cause of timing belt failure is the aux belt breaking and debris getting dragged into the timing belt ,BANG ! Apart from that the engines (5 cyl) are bullet proof. Re the 2 ltr ford/ Citroen engine , I now have a 2.2 ltr May that has a PSA 4 cup diesel and it's very good. Better MPG than than the 2.4 5cyl D5 I had previously just as powerful , is very smooth and quiet. Best to try both as I was biased before actually trying the 4 cyl engine.

Why go to the expense of buying a premium Volvo vehicle that is equip with a run-of-the-mill Peugeot engine?
That is like paying for front row tickets, then choosing to sit at the back. Never buy Volvo with a Peugeot engine, when Volvo engines are readily available. |

PSA (Peugeot/Citroen) have been front runners in diesel engine development for cars and I'd not be too deprecating about their engines. I ran Peugeot 406 Coupes for 16 years and friends in the Coupe Club who ran the 2.2 HDi version maintained that the engine punched above its weight and was virtually bullet proof. Some of the tuned examples would blow my mildly tuned 3 litre V6 away even though they only had 4 pots. I never had one myself, but I'd take the word of a 406 coupe enthusiast as gospel!
