grinding noise when cold
hi folks, I have developed a new grinding noise when cold which is especially bad when turning left. The gear stick also shakes. It goes away after around half a mile and does not return until completely cold. Any ideas? Car is a 1997 v70 t5. Wheel bearings are new, as are engine mounts.
thanks Gareth |

I'm sure you will appreciate it's very difficult to diagnose noises...
Any idea where it comes from, engine? wheels? steering? brakes? Does it happen when you turn the steering wheel? Possibly belt, pump or rack... Ideally a bit more info would be great..... |

Nope it has appeared over the last 2 days. Car has been fine for the last 6 months since I replaced engine mounts. Control arms are a year old as is steering rack. I did go through some deep puddles recently and I'm wondering if a cv joint has been contaminated with water. Just can't understand why it only stays for a few minutes after setting off when cold.

It does indeed. I initially thought it was just turning left but it is now also when I turn right. I'm going to investigate further tomorrow.

Another vote for CV joint, although only happening when cold is odd.

re "Does it make that noise on a tight lock, LH or RH"
Depending on what the "grinding noise" is, it could be that the steering stops on the control arm need a dab of grease where thet get rubbed at full lock. Common problem, easy fix. HTH Steve
