seeping oil from sump plug
As per title, i bought a new sump plug for my rot box, soaked it in oil over night, as per the norm, new spring washer, put it on, finger tight with an extra quater and its dripping oil. So i did it as tight as i would dare, still dripping, so i did it up as tight as i could, still dripping. Have i missed anything? :/

Couple of old Volvos I ran required two or three wraps of PTFE tape round the threads to get a seal .

but it isnt the threads which do the sealing it is the flat face of the plug against the flat face of the sump ( with a washer in between of course )

hmm sounds like a headache for such a simple thing :/ - ill see if a bit of copper flange sealant round the face of the nut will sort out the problem.

Just re-read your original post - are you sure you mean a "spring washer"? It should just be a flat (usually copper) washer - a spring washer won't go flat and, as Clan says, you need the seal at the actual faces, not on the thread.

that is what came with the plug, yes - its a brass looking spring washer with a rubber insert in the middle.
boss has just told me they arent supposed to be split like a spring washer... ordered this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Engine-Oil...ht_1722wt_1199

Thats the wrong type, you want the copper washer that squashes flat when tight. You can only use them once, need a new one each time.
Halfords sell them in a pack of two next to the sump plugs on oil filter stand. part no. HFX 227, same type as thttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Renault-Copper-Sump-Plug-Bung-Washer-7703062062-/220775757018?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM& hash=item336742b4dahis Last edited by jeff t; Oct 2nd, 2013 at 19:20. |

If the captive nut inside the sump is welded on all sides then the only way oil can escape IS via the screw thread . Give the PTFE tape a try .
