The deformable rolled copper ring ( with a form of asbestos in the middle ) will compensate to some extent for a deformed sump . But over the years it has probably gone too wavy for it to do this anymore . what i used to do was take the sump off , bend the tab back that holds the loose nut , then hammer the sump flat on a flat vice around the sump plug sealing area inside the sump , and re assemble . That would last another 8 - 10 years depending on how many gorillas tightened the sump plug at oil changes .

yes pretty straightforward .. there wasnt a gasket volvo used a silicon sealant , i would recommend Loctite SI 5980 for a perfect seal ... It comes in a pressurised container witha trigger .

Lol, me too!
I'm much better at swearing at things and hitting them with a hammer!! Steve P.s, I don't suppose you've got a minute to bob over to 480club and have a butcher's at my thread have you? I wouldn't ask, but you do seem to be the font of all knowledge Clan! Sorry for the hijack Andrew!

You could try a "Dowty Seal/washer" (used on high pressure hydraulic joints). I use one on my sump plug due to same problem of dripping. Seals ok and hasn't been replaced for years.

I took the sump off and flatted it, it is just like clan says. I also pinched a special polymer seal from work, spring loaded so it keeps its shape and it normally good for 50MPa (7200PSI)
like these, except the open spring edge is facing outwards - probalby overkill, but re-useable if not warped the dowty seal is the thing i have got from ebay by the looks of things, its a rubberized insert that is slightly bigger than the metal rim, like a gasket or compression seal. hopefully that will work, if not i have some copper crush washers to one side as recommended by clan aswell

thanks so far it seems to have solved the problem. the annoying bit was getting the sump straitened out - i should have actually attributed the copper washer thing to you david, and jeff apologies lol :P
