Ta for that!

Makes sense that is is to do with timing as fuel consumption is struggling to reach 26 mpg & tickover can be erratic every now & then. I've changed everything to try to solve then on a previous post I was advised to change this thing but was just curious to know what it did & its name before I 'went for it'!

Brill!

Question Not sure but...

I haven't had a 400 series car so I can't say for certain, however 900s have a similarly shaped componet which is a power/ignition amplifier. The part number would help us to give a definitive ID for you

Cheers,

Right, just had another look at this thing. It does not have a number on a place that I can see. Guess it is on the back or something. (As it is pop riveted on I'm reluctant to remove until I have a replacement. In fact I'm not sure how to get it off now as getting a drill in to take out the rivets wil be impossible due to lack of space. Anyway thats just a small thing).

The plug does have four connections inside it which ties in with the earlier post (thanks 'hoff') and it has two other wires which are hard wired into the unit itself. These each connect to one of two terminals on the coil.

Cheers.

Hi All.

I have been wondering where to get one of these plugs from as did'nt want to go and pay main dealer price.

Just had a search on the web and found this firm,
http://www.vehicle-electrics-online.com

They supply parts to original spec & the best bit......... the price for the Ignition Coil Multi plug (or module) is £18.31 in Vat. Also previously I had wondered how to get the old one off, as it is riveted onto the coils bracket & there is not a lot of room to be able to drill it out. Well, they are supplied riveted to a bit of 'Bracket' so it is a case of un-bolt the coil bracket, ditch the old bit & bolt in the new one and connect.

These chaps may of use to others out there. They are in Southsea, by the way.
Cheers

Default An even better bargain........from a Main Dealer!

Found this one purely by luck. Lloyds Volvo of Carlisle happened to have a Coil with the module attached sitting on their shelf gathering dust. It was one they used to test cars ignition circuits - so has never been used in 'anger'.

The chap said it is £112 + vat. When I told him that I could get the module for £18.31 inc, he went to see the parts manager. Who said, "Well we haven't used the thing for years let him have the whole thing for £30". Then they delivered it by hand to my father-in-laws house!

A coil & module for £30 fantastic!

It should be in the post to me today.

Cheers from a happy chappy!

Default Time will tell!

I received my coil & ignition module yesterday via air-mail & fitted it today.

Quite an easy job only two bolts to un-do. However in usual '480' style you do need to be contortionist to get there!

Just need to wait & see if the fuel consumption rises from its measily 26mpg!...........

Unhappy Still got probs. A 'Kangarooing' Auto!

Hi All
Right. Mileage is back up to near normal. So we'll call that sorted.

I now still have a rough running prob. When the car is warm, on tick over the revs fluctuate as if you are 'blipping' the throttle ever so slightly. If I hook it into drive and leave the throttle alone (it should 'creep' smoothly) it kangaroos to the point that it could make you sea sick!

Throttle on and it drives perfectly?

In order to try to solve this, so far I have done as follows.

I have just changed the plugs (again). Third time in 9K different type each time same prob continues. Dizzy & rotor are fine and have been changed - prob continues. As you know from this thread, coil & ignition module are new.

Air mass sensor is only two years old and the connector is new.
Air filter is good.
Timing sensor (on bell housing) has been changed (via scrappy but is spot on a 220 ohms).
HT leads are only 15 months old & are silicone (Beru) jobs.
I have cleaned every earth point that I can find.

Any ideas on what to try next please?
