Default Charging question

With lower than normal use presently, I think I should top up my battery using a charger and whilst the battery is still in the car. Is it ok to do this or is it best to remove the battery?

You should do it with the battery in the car, or the car's BMS (Battery Monitoring System) will not know what you've done.

Make sure you connect the ground cable to engine ground or similar, not to the battery's negative pole.

That’s great thanks. Therefore...no need to disconnect any leads from the battery? ( theory tell me “no”).

Nope - leave that battery connected, connect the positive lead from the charger direct to the battery terminal, connect the negative lead from the charger to an earthing point on the chassis or engine (not the the battery terminal).

I have a mid 2019 V60 diesel, battery is suffering from lack of use, cold and too many shorter than normal journeys, I'm beginning to think it would benefit from a top up or a maintainer. My question to ppl here, is there a battery charger that you recommend? Make/model? What AMP value should I look for?

Thanks in advance

The MXS 5.0 is well known for being a good top up charger. It supports both wet and AGM battery types. No need to disconnect the battery to charge it.

My other car is very infrequently used due its type, in that car owners club, this charger is the go-to most recommended one and has been for many years.

For connecting to the battery I use the positive terminal, plus a fitting on top of the engine for the earth. The charger cable can then run out from under the bonnet next to the headlight. Best to shut bonnet etc so ECU powers down during charging.
