Default k&n panel filter

Is there any difference between a K&n filter and standard filter? Performance wise?

yep more air flow, they are less restrictive than standard but go get a bolt on cone filter, they make a lovely sound, just make sure you run a air feed pipe up to it so it can get as much cool air as poss.

I do have the same question in mind as I'm thinking of buying one but, where is the evidence?

I mean, can the manufacturer provide rolling road measures of performance after fitting one of them?

As far as I am concerned no evidence means no pennies leaving my pocket.

The air filter isn't always the restrictive part of the intake, its usually the snorkel attached to the air box.

I wouldnt bother - on other cars ( BMW's in particular ) its been proven time and again that fitting panel filters gives no gain at all and cone filters actually give reduced power.

Unless you're prepared to seal off the cone filter from the rest of the engine bay and then find a clear way to route cold air to it all it will do is suck in hot air from the engine bay and you'll go slower.

Stick with the standard paper filter and change it often - its not like they're expensive.

Not really on a N/A engine. I had one in my 2.0 n/a S40 didn't make a blind bit of difference. Only good thing about them is one less job to do servicing.

On a turbo engine they are well worthwhile though.

I expect youknowwho to chime in soon and say they blow up engines or something.

Yes, there is ......with K&N you will get error codes and "maybe" drivability problems caused by the MAF getting a coat of oil on the sensor wire.

The Volvo standard air intake is the best available but you can modify the box for better flow.

There is no advantage at all with the turbo models as the correct amount of air is forced in via the turbo. The turbo will purely grab the air where ever it is!

On N/A models you would be better off removing the temp. sensor which adjust a flap in the airbox and wedge the flap open fully to get the airflow unrestricted.

I believe i know who you mean, he`s been a member on here for about 4 yrs.

He`s had 12 Volvo`s, 4 of which were turbo`s so as i see you referring to you know who not knowing much, i find that difficult to understand.

Although he does do all his own work on his motors doesn`t use a mechanic like some do then say they know it all and also he does`nt desert owners who want help in the middle of a thread like some do! ....like at the moment!

But as you correctly say probably will chime in soon here help

I had a K&N on my Golf GTTDI (along with loads of other mods including hybrid turbo).

The filter gained 1bhp (rolling road tested), not worth it if that's all you're fitting. I was happy 'cause it let me hit my target 220bhp
