Default TF-80SC AWD faulty

I have an issue with the TF-80SC on my 2008 V70 T6. The problem is intermittent (probably once every couple of weeks) and appears random. On driving off from overnight cold the box hunts for gearchanges, slips and generally misbehaves. After a couple of miles I stop and switch off. The engine fans cut in and there is a smell of hot oil. After about 4-5 minutes I start up and drive off - the car and gearbox operate faultlessly for the rest of the day and for several days thereafter.

The fault occurs in all modes - D, Sport and manual selection.

I changed the fluid (Gibbons method) about 50,000 miles ago and then drained/refilled (probably a 50% partial change) about 10,000 miles ago, both with JWS 3309 spec fluid; there are no leaks and the level is correct.

I suspect the cause is not the fluid because it is so random and intermittent.

Does anyone have any suggestions please?

TIA

Having the latest software and fault codes would help a bit...

What Clan sez, I was getting an intermittent slip usually if it a low speed pull away. I had a gripe at the dealer and they updated the software aaaaand it gone thank god.
The car was fine in manual mode but in Auto it’d play up every one in a while ion a run and it was usually once everything had warmed up. I’m having the box serviced next year.

And I'll third that... had a number of issues on my 2015 XC60 at 100k. New fluid and software at the dealer, 1 year and 25k later - still no more issues.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have the car booked in for the seatbelt recall next month and will get the dealership to upload the latest software.

There is an additional factor here that I forgot to mention in my first post. I had the Polestar upgrade shortly after I got the car. As I understand it, Polestar modifies the gearbox shift positions so.....do I need a gearbox software upgrade or a Polestar upgrade/reload to sort the gearbox issue - or both?

The main dealer says he can't tell me which, or what the cost will be, until the car is plugged in to VIDA at the workshop.

Thanks.

If you have the car serviced by a Volvo main dealer, the software is updated as a matter of course free of charge so whatever upgrade VIDA says is necessary, it shouldn't cost you anything. Once installed, the Polestar optimisation software becomes part of the car's software system and is included in all upgrades.

Volvo provide some worthwhile incentives to allow their dealers to have the routine servicing work. Only a dealer can upgrade the car's software via a direct link to Volvo Gothenburg and in addition to that they provide a year's free breakdown rescue service throughout Europe which has got to be a valuable incentive.

Thanks - I didn't know that. I became disillusioned with the main dealership some years ago and only use them now for work I can't do myself and services unavailable at my independent. I'll leave it up to them and expect a bill!
