Post '99 S40 - Starting problems - Electrical fault?

Hi guys...

You've always been so fab at helping with my problems, so I thought I would start here for this prob

Have a 1999 S40 with factory fitted alarm and immobiliser. Just over this weekend, it has developed a fault (and only since visiting the MOT test centre on Friday I might add!!).

Simply... The car wont start... not at first anyway! Its not an engine issue. The immobiliser seems to be the problem, or the electrical communication in between the key and the immobiliser at least. There seems to be no pattern to this, but purely ad-hoc, the car will then start after about 20 mins of twisting the key back and forth until RSI sets in!!

We called out an auto electrician this morning as it wouldnt start at all, and as usual, they poor guy turns up and the bloody car starts first time... what are the chances? But then on the other hand, my other half then ran it to work, but it wouldnt start at tea time for him then, until he did the normal 20 minute routine of twisting the key numerous times.

Only option now is to take it to Volvo, which we have booked for tomorrow, but they want £90/hour + VAT!!!

Any ideas anyone? All input gratefully received

Love and stuff from Anthea x

Hi there!

Let me just set the record straight and that i am no mechanic whatsoever!! hahaha!! However, from what u have wrote, u appear to have experienced a similar problem to me only just this past wknd.

My car died (see the topic i done previous) and my engine immobiliser / computer error light kept flashing after this. I have, in the past hour literally, paid for a new battery to be installed to my S40 (only a 1.6 S-reg '99 model) as it appeared that it still had the original battery from new under the bonnet!!! yes, ven after 92,000 miles nearly!!!

anyway, perhaps a new battery might be in order as this worked for me...*fingers crossed*

As for the Volvo Dealer, they are sheer rip offs, imo, i mean i have only had my car a few weeks and i have discovered this so please do NOT go there whatsoever as i think u will be throwing hard earned cash down the drain...

...my suggestion is to try the yellow pages, see if anyone can do a "diagnotics check" (or whatever it is!!) and hook up a computer to the car computer to sort it out, but not a computer like the one ur on now!! hahaha!!

Well, hope i have given u a few thoughts or ideas to think about there..

good luck!

Andy
