Post 440 - Driving to Naples - Losing Coolant on shutoff

We have a Volvo 440 (1993, Xi, 1.8) that we got ideally to take to Naples Italy.

We've just discovered after running the engine, whilst it cools that the expansion cap is hissing to let air in, and water is being lost. Should this be something we worry about for a trip to Italy? The oil filler cap is not showing any signs the oil is getting water in, I'm going to watch the exhust after starting it tonight, but that didn't seem steamy last night, and there's no signs of water going any where in the engine bay, and the passange compartment is not seeming damp either.

Any ideas more than welcome, even if it's a just that car does that don't worry!

Given we don't really want to spend much on the car, given on of the rules is it was brought fun under 100 quid!

We're planning to scrap this car on our return to the UK (if it makes it to Italy and back) hence if anyone want's anything from it please let us know!

Cheers for your time,

Mike

How much water is being lost ?, if it is a little and the cap is hissing it could just be loss of water through the cap. A new cap would solve that as the rubber seal may be damaged. If it is lossing a lot of water you would probably see signs of it somewhere.

What is the trip in aid of ?. You must be a fan of Kevin 'Bloody' Wilson with a team name like that ?

Only about a couple of pints (or a litre) a time. We think we may have found a leak from a hose, but are double checking that one, day light being the issue there!

My Brother's fault for the name he's a Kevin 'Bloody' Wilson fan, the trip is part of http://www.staples2naples.com
and we're trying to raise money for the RNLI http://www.justgiving.com/s2ndilligaf
