Question Help! Fault code reader query!

Hoping someone can help a novice OBD2 user answer a query regarding Lambda sensor readings.
When I took the readings on my 138,000 miles S40 1.8 petrol (2005), the O2S11 reading (sensor before the catalyst) said 0.1 volts and -3% (obviously this is fluctuating all the time around those figures as the engine ticks over). The reading on the O2S12 (the sensor past the catalyst) said 0.7 volts (also fluctuating) but always N/A %.
My question is - does the N/A mean not available or not applicable? I thought the two sensors worked together to keep the mixture correct by comparing the oxygen content of the exhaust gases before and after the catalyst and 'talking' to the engine management system to correct it if necessary?
Any help would be appreciated!
