Default V60 Engine Coolant Temperature P0119 - going to France

Hi experts,

I have a Volvo V60 2012 1.6 and during the recent hot weather, a message about the Engine Coolant System requiring servicing had appeared.
This has now disappeared but as I have a ODB reader, I looked at the codes and it seems there is a P0119 error.

Unfortunately I am due to drive to the south of France Wednesday and was wondering if I need to get this seen to before I go..

The engine temperature from the ODB reader is saying between 70 and 80degC.

Is it likely to be the thermostat as well, I have heard that in hot weather the thermostat could be stuck open. The car seems to run ok otherwise.

Many thanks for your advice.

It shouldn't be between such a large range.
I don't know the specific running temperature of your engine but it's likely to be around 85+°C and should stay within a degree or two of that once up to temperature.

You have symptoms of a thermostat sticking open which isn't the end of the world but fuel consumption will suffer and the thermostat may free itself and stick closed (very bad).

Personally, I'd investigate further and change it.
An obvious one is to view the coolant temperature under acceleration.
If it dives, the thermostat is definitely sticking open.

This video shows how to easily test the coolant temperature sensor and thermostat.

Thank you for the reply - the video was very useful. After removing the connector and re-seating it and then taking the car out for a drive, the temperature reading was 80 +/- 2 degC, which is fantastic.

I'll give it a longer run tomorrow and hopefully we should be good to go.

Thank you again

No problem.
Your owner's manual should confirm the thermostat opening temperature for your engine.
Mine is 90°C so constantly hovers at 88-89°C
If you have a temperature needle on the dash, it should be dead centre always once up to temperature.
