Two things you can't change when fitting an LSD are the relative positions of the pinion and crownwheel. As the speedo picks up its signal from the crownwheel (as far as i'm aware) then there shouldn't be a problem with the speedo.

Speedo works off a ring gear on the other end off the diff to the crown wheel.

Thanks for that - i've never needed to delve into the diff so was going on memory from the diagrams in the Haynes manuals, last looked at um years ago!

I'd take a guess the replacement diff is designed to fit with the original halfshafts and casing and also the reluctor ring/ring gear/whatever you like to call it so i don't see why it should be a problem.

I've heard the Trac-Loc diffs from early Jeep Cherokees are a fairly easy swap as well, seeing as they also use the Dana 40/41 diffs, same as Volvo. Might be another option.

Why don't you ask them direct about the speedo take off? They seem to have a very user friendly website when I looked shortly after your initial post - Bob

You must retain the tone ring for the speedometer to work. Early 740s used a 12 count tone ring, 1987-88 (with ABS) used a 96 count tone ring, and 1989+ used a 48 count tone ring. An interesting article from turbobricks, http://forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?t=189043

I have just fitted a True trac to my 1031 axle so i can give you a list of things you will need when changing the diff if needed
Have to say it's a good lsd and cost me 530.00 shipped to the UK

I have a Gripper....it's the bollocks. Gripper paid for my diff to be sent back along with my speedo gear which they machined to fit at no cost at all. Most of their customers are motorsport based but I imagine they will be doing loads more road cars now. John at Gripper is REAL helpful...he has the measurements on file now.
