Default DSTC service required

Hi there

Not sure if anyone have had this before but today when I was driving home the S60 came up with a warning saying the DSTC service required.

From the last service in SEP the garage told me the front brake pads have about 8000 miles left. Since then I have not had any major changes to it.

I did notice the front brakes being a bit slack or worn as I have to press harder to brake than before so I probly have to replace the front pads soon.

It's had some new tyres for a while and yesterday I have plugged a 12v splitter cable to the 12v socket in the boot to power my Dashcam and the footwell lighting.

Could these electrics be the cause of the problem?

I have also noticed that the Dashcam and the LED footwell lights after i have locked the car 4 to 5 mins they are stilll on, is this usual?

When I plugged the same thing inside the tunnel console of my v40 it switches off after 2 min

My car has done around 125k and has been serviced regularly.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated., Many thanks

The power socket in the boot is permanently on, whereas the the sockets in the cabin go off after (as you noticed) a few mins. Dont know about the other faults sorry.

When my XC60 had a DSTC service required message (randomly with one or two other messages), the fault was a broken sensor ring on a front axle.

I had a DSTC issue recently, we were driving on narrow, steep country lanes in NW Spain, we descended about 1800 feet over 11 miles in about 40 minutes, lots of braking (like most of the time) average speed of about 15mph

Almost at the bottom a DSTC message lit up - (I think it was that DSTC is no longer working) drove to the Paradore and spent 40 minutes on the phone to Volvo on Call to determine what to do (apart from panic <g>). VOC diagnosis perhaps a stone/pebble had displaced a DSTC sensor some where. The problem may go away, try restarting the engine - it was still there. No problem re driving they said if it continues call back and we will decide what to do.

Next day loaded the car up as we had to move on, started the engine - the warning message was still there - not good - any way started driving and within a few hundred yards the warning light went out - and has not been on again.

Re the stats obtained from the GPX log from the Garmin Satnav, I never go any where new without both satnavs working (and occasionally arguing it out)

That's more indicative of a fairly serious problem with your brakes, not slightly worn pads. Your brakes should give exactly the same performance pretty much regardless of pad wear.

Cheers for all the comments, I started it today and there was no DSTC message anymore.

Hopefully it's an one off issue and won't come back.

Didn't know the 12v in the boot is always on, so may be I have to plug it around the back of the front seats somehow.... At least that way I won't drain the battery

Many thanks for the comments and advice, the brakes seems to behave normally and recently one of our. Neighbours have broken a glass drinks bottle in the road and no one had picked up the debris since it's an open residential parking area, don't think it would have been the cause but I can hear the crumbs when turning the steering wheels, anyway it's been cleared off now by the council so it should be fine..

Default Dtsc warning

Hi just to add ,this has just come up with my xc60 2.4d 175bhp at 141k miles.
in my case it was one of the leads to the front hubs had detached itself from the sensor in the hub. the lead is retained by a flexible plastic clip-end of which seems a bit rounded instead of pointy-result plugs in ok but any tension or vibration means lead detaches enough to lose signal and warning comes up and dtsc switches off- new cable required.

Re my post in October, I had another DSTC incident, once again in Spain / Portugal, again descending quite steep twisty roads so lots of braking and steering.

After a few minutes of "resting" the DSTC warning goes away.

No permanent memory of the problem was stored in the car's system - or if it was the dealer did not menntion it at the next service.

A lot of DSTC messages are caused when the individual signals from the tone tone rings on the wheels are lost or corrupted. This can be caused by a ring, sensor, wiring or wheel bearing failure, but also by dust and stones.

The message will not go away until it's fixed or good signals are seen again - hence it will stay on when you restart the car until your drive for a bit.

The codes will be stored so it may be worth getting it plugged in to know for sure.

I don't know if this is relevant but I've had DSTC messages of "Service Required" when the injectors have gone on my S60 Drive 1.6D. On these occasions the car has gone into limp mode. When 2 injectors failed last week the message flashed up and I parked at my daughters house. The next day when I went to recover the car the message had disappeared and the car appeared to be working OK. I drove down to the Volvo dealership and they connected it to their test system and confirmed the injectors were on there way out.
