That was indeed an exceedingly good buy. It never ceases to amaze me what commercial versions of once common small cars make today. But should it? As working vehicles, they often led a hard life and few survived. The laws of supply and demand come into effect and survivors command a premium over the car from which they were derived.

Factor in too that small cars in general do not survive as well, and is it any surprise that an Isetta 300 or Fiat 500, for example, may command more than a similar year / condition, originally much more expensive, large car?

Regards, John.

Great point, I love clever, small cars.

How about, on that theme, the original baby Subaru pickup, whatever it was called - IIRC they have a real following (which might of course mean the bird has flown)

The "BRATT" My dad had one in 1991. It was great off road. Had a 1600cc engine and went anywhere. He blew the engine up eventually and fitted a 1800cc engine. It was painted hammerite blue!!

We had a MK1 Subaru 1600 estate. Scrapped as builders burnt out clutch.
also a MK2 1800 estate. Hi-low ratio. RUH127Y.
Dad also had a Subaru L series.
Years later a Subaru XT.
The MK1 and Pickup were the best off road. The MK2 suffered from mud ingress into driveshafts and we needed 3 in the 3 years living up a mile long track when my Grandparents bought a cottage with no services in Herefordshire.
I have seen none since. Popular at the time with vets and farmers so generally abused and scrapped.

James

I know somebody who has a 1970 Mini pick up that has been dry stored since 1973; it has less than 20000 miles on the clock. He is a terrible hoarder and there is loads of junk piled around it- he has no idea what he has or what it is worth.
I agree about the former commercial models making silly money; I had a minor pick up and a Mini van in the ‘70s and both would have been worth serious money now.its the same with Land Rovers; any of the series 2a or 3 variants, or the later 90s and 110s are quite useable daily drivers, provided you don’t do too many motorway miles, and are appreciating rapidly.
A good mid ‘60s SWB 2a with an overdrive and 2.5 Sherpa diesel that a friend paid £1500 for 15 years ago has just been sold for £10000.

Passed a stunning jaguar xj40 today and was reminded of this thread. Unloved jags usually rise in value and few are as unloved as the razor edged xj40. I ran a four litre sovereign for a year and found it to be a wonderful car, quick, handled well, relatively frugal, the aj6 was a good engine. Remember when mk10s and 420g were banger money? I'm 48 and that's well within my lifetime.
