Default Engine System Service Required

Hi all,

I just picked up an 07 XC90 D5 and got the Engine System Service Required message on the dash. It says 046 with the trip pressed what does this code relate to?

Been out to the car again and message is now cleared.

Will see what happens once I've been out for a run later.

Only way to find out what problems exist is to read the stored diagnostic fault codes

As SwissXX90 says, the only sure check is to have all the codes read; however, one of the most common reason for this message is that the engine oil is too high.
You imply that you have just acquired this car; did it have a service before you got it? If so, the engine oil should not have been filled any higher than half way between the marks on the dip stick. If it is higher than that, drain a bit off and the error may clear itself.

Can I get a code reader program somewhere and do this or does it require a scanner or dealer visit?

You can acquire exactly the same "scanner" as the dealer uses, for very reasonable prices, from people on this forum

It's called VIDA and runs on a Windows PCT.
Identical in all respects to what the dealer uses... and it's a heck of a lot more than a scanner: full parts diagrams, fault finding procedures, disassembly and reassembly information, and functional and technical descriptions of absolutely everything in your car.
