I went for a facelift model when I bought mine for that very reason and whilst it's rare to find one of these with damaged splines, I certainly would always check especially if viewing one bearing in mind how quickly it can be done.
Every pre facelift that I viewed had knackered splines and the owners seemed oblivious.

Have not checked propshaft. Bit late now I guess as I bought it. Just keeping fingers crossed I have not bought a lemon. But the weather is fine, I will lie under car and try and turn propshaft to rear. However being a weakling, it may not turn worn or not ;-)
