Evening Mark, just a thought, are you a member of Which? they are very good on 'Sale of goods' and the legal side of the situation, you find yourself in,You could sign up and use there expertise, if not already a member. There is also the AA and R.A.C. I have no idea what they are like at present, but in the past they were useful/helpful in these situations. I spent a few years in the 'Trade' and it certainly looks as if your dealer is playing 'Russian roulette' with your motor! I do hope you get it sorted.

Regards,Keith.

Do I have any option?

Guildford

Yes, RUN from there

You are not liable for the parts. I would ask ALL money back. Bring the car to a Volvo specialist that is professional and start from there. People here on forum can help find a real garage. And I would add, not much hope about getting help from a distance with such weird issue.

KSMI> Which? - There's a good idea that we didn't think of. A subscription might be money well spent. Great suggestion thanks!

Oragex> I kind of figured that the problem would either one of those that all of you guys would recognise right away as a common failure, or that it'd be very obscure. I think the posts to date have universally indicated it is the latter.

In which case, all the good advice about the reasonableness of the quality of service performed by my main dealer to date seem to kick in.

But if it is a really hard problem on a car out of warranty, how much risk or cost should a dealer bear in rectifying it?

Oragex> As a fallback, I think I do need to know where I'd take it next, if this route reaches its end unresolved. Where should I look to find such information please?

We have seen several people with similar stories. An electrical issue hard to figure out, several parts replaced for no reason, finally the owner sells the car.

Only an independent garage specialized in Volvo can spend time to find the fault, otherwise it may be better to take the hit and get rid of the car.

You could try asking at the Citizens Advice Bureau - they could give you some free consumer advice.

Good idea AB-UK, we have a CAB in Guildford. I'll do so tomorrow.
