Default Modifications to my V70 T5...

As some of you will know, I've been quietly upgrading my car over the last few months. I've come to a "natural resting point", so to speak (ie I've run out of cash), and so I thought I'd post about my experiences.

My V70 T5, having came out of Kent Constabulary two and a half years ago under-par and needing some TLC, is now in decidedly better shape!

I don't have any accurate HP figures yet, the most recent power test was a week ago on a scorching day when the ECU was cutting boost back to 0.5 bar at 6000rpm. That yielded 298bhp at the crank (I'm afraid I don't know the whp number), but obviously on-the-road performance is a fair bit up on that.

Mods now fitted include:

Engine / Tuning
MTE ECU upgrade (1.1 - 1.2 bar peak boost)
19T Turbo (new not recon...)
"Green" Volvo injectors
Walbro race fuel pump
Aquamist 1S water injection system
Ported exhaust manifold
Ferrita 3" downpipe and race cat
Ferrita 2 1/2" cat-back exhaust
Apexi cone filter (might not add to the power, but the NOISE!!!)

Suspension / Handling
IPD drop links
Volvo strut brace
Koni "yellow" adjustable shocks and matched springs (front)
850 "R" shocks and springs (rear)
17" Comets (anthracite) with 215/40/17 Falkens
302mm police spec front brakes, standard rear brakes

And coming soon...
S60R clutch
Limited-slip diff
Custom MTE ECU map
Braided brake hoses and better fluid!

It has to be said that in the course of this work I have had to replace both Lambda sensors, the MAF sensor, the Intake Air Temperature sensor, and the Electronic Throttle Module! Damn those ME7s.

I had the work done at Power Engineering (rolling road tuning and diagnostics), SW Autos (hardware fitting, diagnostics and on-road testing), Owen Developments (exhaust manifold porting and turbo matching), MRG Chippenham (Volvo main dealers for the ETM replacement) and On My Front Drive (most of the rest of the work - including fitting the turbo with the car on axle stands!). Kalmar Union supplied many of the parts, others came from VPTuning (drop links), SW Autos (19T, fuel pump), Larkspeed (Konis), A Number Of My Mates (injectors, Apexi cone), eBay (more injectors) and a Northerner I Only Met Once (Comets).

I haven't done any custom ECU mapping yet with the car, it's running an off-the-shelf map at the moment. Now the fuelling problem is fixed (tired fuel pump), the car is running on the rich side; I'm hoping for some substantial gains from leaning the car out a bit.

Oh, and the car's now done 162k.

BRING ON THE NEXT 1/4 MILE DAY!!!!

Thanks! Yeah, one of the problems I have is what to do next... I suppose the brakes are an obvious area. Pads are still "whatever the police were using", until I wear them out... then maybe the DS2500s or something else?

You're welcome to a ride whenever we meet up!

that would be good.

if your still using the police pads, then they are (ive been told) the mintex 1144 pads with are pretty good to start with.

Just for fun, I'm going to have a guess at how much you spent! Here goes -

MTE ECU upgrade - £400
19T Turbo (new not recon...) - £550
"Green" Volvo injectors - £500
Walbro race fuel pump - £150
Aquamist 1S water injection system - £300
Ported exhaust manifold - £200
Ferrita 3" downpipe and race cat - £550
Ferrita 2 1/2" cat-back exhaust - £250
Apexi cone filter (might not add to the power, but the NOISE!!!) - £150

Suspension / Handling
IPD drop links - £30
Volvo strut brace - £65
Koni "yellow" adjustable shocks and matched springs (front) - £200
850 "R" shocks and springs (rear) - £150
17" Comets (anthracite) with 215/40/17 Falkens - £1000
302mm police spec front brakes, standard rear brakes - £1000

MAF sensor - £200
Intake Air Temperature sensor - £50
Electronic Throttle Module - £600

Sub total = £6345 exc VAT
VAT = £1110
Total = £7455 inc VAT!!!

Now let's say the wheels and the brakes you got for cheap, so we can knock off £1500. That's about £6000 I reckon you spent so far! How close is my guess? I haven't included any labour for fitting or dyno time either.

Adam.

Two other things to consider are HID bulbs (I'd really recommend these) and improved brakes either ds2500 pads or an AP brake kit.
I'm surprised you can get 298 bhp with 0.5 bar boost!

Hello again chaps...

Simon - yes I was surprised at 298 on 0.5 bar! So were the guys at Power Engineering! The car now pulls 1.0 to 1.1 up to around 6000 revs, and then up to 1.2 to 1.3... it just wants to go on and on. I'd love to get an accurate dyno figure one day - maybe at VT when their Big Monster Fan has arrived, or Abbey Motorsport if I don't have time for the trip to Bromsgrove.

And Adam - you know that's not funny! Why would I want to add up how much I've spent - or see someone else do it for me!!! :-)

But seriously. No two ways of looking at it, Volvos are not cheap cars to run or tune. Fortunately I was able to offset some of the cost of the upgrading by taking the opportunity to repair the car! Some of the components (er... many of the components) were knackered through years of police driving and the 160 thousand miles on the clock, and needed replaing anyway (basically I factored them into the cost of the car when I bought it). Upgrading was therefore a marginal cost in many cases (compare the cost of a 19T to a 16T for example).

The other thing to consider is that my car is now perfectly placed for a custom map to raise the power futher. If we take the 298bhp figure as accurate at 0.5 bar, it's easy to see that we might be running 315 or 320bhp on the road NOW, and with a custom map a fair bit more. The car is running rich at the moment throughout the rev range.

And you're right, I did get some of the bits for cheap. For example, the Comets were a free swap for my T5 wheels (as you correctly identified). I only paid half of the ETM replacement. I did plenty of wheeling-and-dealing with the suspension... and most of the non-expert labour I did myself or with friends (I note that you excluded that anyway).

I AM going to put a number down, because I don't want to be seen to dodge the question. £3400 give or take a couple of hundred. This covers all the work to date - suspension, exhaust, tuning - and has been spread over the three years I've owned the car.

That makes me feel a little better - it's still a lot of cash though!

I would expect so. You can get about 350 bhp on just the 19T, full exhaust and 2 other simple upgrades, so I would imagine that with the extra stuff you have, such as the ported exhaust manifold and the custom remap, you should have the potential for a little more.

That is truly inspiring stuff - can we see a graph?

Yes. Not today though, cos I'm at home! They're not from my dyno by the way.
