Modern day people like me like to see the data, read the descriptions, understand the functions, learn about all the special ways that things work, and have the exploded diagrams before them on their PCs to get the part numbers in advance of buying replacement bits.
Oh, and read fault codes as well.

Olden day mechanics just figure it out using spanners and hammers.

Different methods for different people, whatever you prefer is based on your experience, training, background, and preferences.

To be honest, I would imagine I am maybe younger than you? I am not old.

I prefer to just get the job done, finish it. I can’t really think of a time I couldn’t do a task due to lack of Vida at all?

Handy for part numbers but they are not hard to get.

OK XC90 Mk1,

let's say your AWD system is not working and yes you've checked the propshaft and it can't be turned ( which is good ).

Now without Vida / Dice and without involving someone else please explain to us how you are going to determine what the fault is?

PS, if you can have the codes read whenever you feel like it for £40 you are indeed a lucky chap but even at that you will only get 3 goes before your Vida/Dice plus used laptop has paid for itself.

These vehicles are complex, guess with your wallet if you wish but I prefer accurate assessment of the problem.

Simples said the Meerkat.

Everything you mentioned there had no absolute need of Vida / Dice ( even including gearbox fluid change ) but that's because you were servicing and not trying to trace a fault on a very complex vehicle.

ABS light comes on, how far are you going to get with your socket set.

SRS light illuminated because you were careless removing radio unit, show me how you reset it without Vida / Dice?

If you are looking to get rid, I'm just up the road from you...

Cheers

OMG chaps - re Vida, Murphy's law dictates when you don't have it you will need it!! I for one am interested in the number of faults you see which clear so often ignored but this can indicate a part that may be wearing out or needs some maintenance. It also might give you time to plan its replacement.

One item I am looking at is the DPF - I would like to monitor its regeneration so I can see as and when it starts to have issues. Vida tells you the fore and aft pressures so you can built a picture of what is typical and then be able to see when a problem is brewing.

As an engineer I am familiar with preventative maintenance and conditional based monitoring to see when components are wearing out - intrigued why this is not being done for cars but can guess why. When I have time I am going to use Vida to record various data sets so I can understand what is normal behaviour and then see when problems arise what might be different which should help in the diagnosis along with the fault codes provided.

VIDA provides quite a wealth of information which helps you identify and rectify problems before they get serious enough.

Example:
My car was showing an injector issue on #5 cylinder occasionally.
Not enough to trigger a dashboard warning lamp, but the issue was logged

By observing the logs I made a decision to inspect the injectors, and found oxidized connectors, and a loom pressed hard against the injector body.

I cleaned all the connections, tied back the loom, and the problem was solved.

I was never off the road, I never had an engine malfunction, because I used the logs to alert me to a problem starting to occur.

I'm pleased my thread has provoked such quality debate and information sharing. VIDA/DICE is something I'm considering but it's not on my priority list, though to someone who knows what they're looking at I can appreciate how useful it would be.

Other updates though...

The replacement navigation discs arrived. Disc one was inserted and my breath was bated. Unfortunately the disc couldn't even be read.

I somewhat grumpily contacted the eBay seller who thinks "there is a problem with my unit or my drive needs to be cleaned". I'm very sceptical about this, but he has offered me my money back so I'll probably return the discs and ponder my next move. I do want updated maps but I don't especially want to pay Volvo hundreds of pounds for the privilege.

Does anyone have any links to a seller on eBay or similar where they have had success in updating their navigation?

On a positive note, I managed to find a tonneau cover for sale on eBay not far from me. I won the auction and this morning I took a 25 minute jaunt up the A1 to pick it up. A good find at £48.

Similarly positive is that the V5 arrived. This allowed me to assign the private plate I had on retention and means the Volvo is now wearing a new reg. I feel I have to give credit where it's due to the DVLA on this one. The process of assigning private plates to cars used to be a horrendous exercise of standing in queues at the post office and waiting weeks for paperwork to arrive but these days you can get it all done online in minutes - most satisfactory.

I snapped a few pictures of the Volvo with new plate while 'off-roading'.

Thanks for looking.

Just a side note.

With the tonneau cover in place, it used to be the case that there was not room to stow the tonneau in the car with the 3rd row seats up (tonneau is wider than the space behind the rear set of seats).

That's why so many have the tonneau removed from the car on day 1 and then its whereabouts forgotten about come sale time. I guess it also helps if the car in question has tinted rear windows to hide what might be otherwise visible in the boot. From new they also came with some trim clips to cover the slot in the car so if the owner decided not to keep the tonneau in the car you didn't see the holes in the trim.

I see you have the later model tonneau (with strap) so it might be they changed the car / tonneau to allow it to fit. If you do plan to use the 3rd row seats it would be worth checking if you can fit it behind the 3rd row seats in case you ever need the 3rd row at short notice when away from home, as otherwise the 2nd row has to sit with the tonneau cover across their laps (ask me how I know !)
