Ok, if it's not constant while ignition on/cranking, does that mean the main pump is knackered, or the relay? Where is the relay?

hi Ian,could do with checking to see if you have a constant live feed and earth to the pump when cranking,the fuel pump relay is in the fuse box in front of the gearlever,you might need to remove the cig lighter panel 2 screws to gain access to the top of the fuse box,think the relay is green and fits towards the back on the right handside.

Right... so, disconnected the union on the fuel distributor again, and it sprayed out for a second, and then stopped. Switches ignition on, and cranked over and nothing came out of there... so obviously no fuel from main pump.

Took the inlet pipe off main pump and a bit of petrol (just a little bit) poured out and stopped. Turned igntion on and cranked over and nothing at all coming through there.

Does that mean the in-tank pump is knackered? A few people said the car should still start and run even if the in-tank pump is dead though?


At the moment it's facing uphill on my drive, so pushed it down to level ground and put just over 2 more gallons in (bringing it to nearly half a tank). Tried again and absolutely nothing is happening now.... it just cranks over and over, with the pump underneath sounding strange, but not even attempting to fire.

How do you get the pump out of the boot, and where are the connections for it? I haven't got a Haynes yet, so I have no diagrams of wiring connectors to follow at all.

Does it sounds like the in-tank one to you? Reading the FAQ it says there are 2 relays inside the FI relay, and shows you how to check the one, but not the other?

hi Ian,the car should still run even if the tank pump has failed,but does not rule out still fuel supply problem from tank,one way test would be to put a seperate fuel supply to the inlet of the main pump,ie try and find similar hose and connect to pump and put in a fuel can and see if car will run.

Ok, well with half tank of fuel there was nothing on the inlet side of the main pump..... are you sure it will run if the tank pump fails?

The FAQ says the main pump shouldn't be ran without the tank pump functioning.

yes,if in tank pump fails it puts more strain on the main pump and causes it to be noisey,ie high pitched whine,anybody here got any other thoughts,CLAN ?

The main pump will lift fuel from the main tank through the stationery tank pump and produce pressure to run .. the in-tank pump helps in hot wetaher when vapourisation in the line would cause hiccups in fuel pressure , it pressurises the line from tank to pump by about .,5 bar to prevent air pockets . In the winter it makes no notcable difference to fuel delivery ...

Right, ok well as far as I can see the relay is fine... when you switch ignition on it activates for about 2 seconds and shuts off, then activates and both pumps have got 12V while cranking over.

There is definitely NO fuel getting to the main pump at all.

Took the pump out of the tank and connecting it straight to the battery it does nout... so think it is definitely problematic.

Now the little convoluted pipe that connects onto the in-tank pump (see picture) is split aswell... but I'm not sure if I've done that trying to get the damn thing out of the tank.

Do you think replace pump and pipe?

Ian the split pipe should be the reason for no fuel delivery,especially if the split is above the fuel level in the tank ! it would just draw air above the fuel level, replace the pipe and try Ian,it should pump fuel at low pressure to the inlet on the pump.you should be able to hear the tank pump when its running,its not very loud though.
