driveshaft question
Hello
For a few months now I have had a knock/clunk when coming on and off the clutch and on /off the accelerator, but only at low speeds And then today when going round a roundabout I heard a noise, that I hadn't heard before Is this likely a failing driveshaft? I was going to take it to the local mechanic but I'd rather save wasting time and work it out myself if I can. I've had the car on my ramps already and I couldn't see anything obviously loose

sounds like it might be your CV joint. Test if it makes the same noise going round a left hand bend. If not, it could be your left CV joint!

cheers for that. Could the CV joint be the cause of the knocking noise as well do you think?

The knock when coming off the clutch may be the top engine mount allowing the engine to rock back & forth.
CV joints usually give a sort of clicking sound on full lock.

There are two CV joints per driveshaft[an inner and outer obviously]the usual test for the outer is to drive slowly round in a circle on full lock-do this in both directions and repeat in reverse-and listen for a clicking sound. For the inners you need to be under the car, grab hold of the shaft as near the inner joint as you can and try for any up/down and fore/aft movement in the joint.
You don't say what kind of noise it made that you'd not heard before? my first thought[which could be well off]is that if nothing underneath is obviously loose or broken check the engine/gearbox mounts easiest to check is as has been stated by volvo again the mount that bolts to the top of the engine and is braced to the bulkhead. |
