Default Gearbox Oil

A little bit of advice required. I had my gearbox oil changed approximately 3 years/40,000 miles ago by an independent Volvo garage.

I wasn’t thinking of changing it again for another couple of years/20,000 miles and was wondering if I could have a look to see what state the fluid is in as in colour wise which should indicate how it’s aged.

I was thinking of very slowly slackening off the centre drain plug (the one that helps indicate the correct fluid level) until a very small amount leaks out onto a piece of kitchen roll to indicate how red or black it might be.

Depending on what the fluid looks like then I could decide to stick with my original plan or bring forward the fluid change?

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Chunk

There is no dipstick on the 6-speed box in your car so the only way to check is drain a little off from the filler level plug under the car. If the engine is not running, about a litre will drain out so be prepared to remove the middle level plug and quickly refit it once you've got just enough to visually check the condition.

This video will explain all....
