Took the old girl in for her MOT and was rewarded with a pass and no advisories.
MOT technichian commented on her being a nice running car for her age. |

Dreadful crunching from the both sides of the C70 on full lock, put it up on the ramps, hmmm don't think the steering stops have ever been greased!!
Applied copper ease to the stops, off the ramps quick test drive & low and behold the noises are gone.

Timing belt, tensioner, idler and serpentine belt replaced with all genuine Volvo from FRF @ 40,999miles and approx 14 years. It would appear the previous owner hadn't changed them from new. Replacement water pump wasn't required so original was left in place.
I would have changed the fuel filter too, but made the mistake of buying that from an on-line shed!! No idea which vehicle it is actually for but certainly not a 2005 C70! Will I never listen to my own advice............

Absolutely nothing; apart from taking it for its MoT. Somewhat surprisingly but very gratifyingly it passed. It was commented on as being in very good condition for its age and mileage.
Not bad for a car any reasonable person would have scrapped when the cambelt failed 18 months ago. So we're now planning to take it to the Northern BKV but I doubt I'll enter it. 1998 V70 Tdi Auto 223,500 miles |

Discovered an error in the handbook.
The MoT guy commented that one of the front foglights wasn't working. I hadn't bothered to check it since I didn't think they were part of the MoT. However when I bought the car I got a set of spare bulbs, partially because of regular trips to Europe and partially because I like to replace failed bulbs as soon as possible. So checking the handbook, it said that the bulb needed was an H3 55Watt and sure enough I had one in the car. A fat lot of use it was! The foglight actually takes an H1 and needless to say I didn't have one. For once the Haynes manual gets it partially right; although they list the bulb as an H3, they do show a picture of the foglight bulb being changed and it's clearly an H1. Martin 1998 V70 Tdi Auto Mind you, since the original bulb has lasted 20 years it's unlikely this error has caused much of a problem. Last edited by Martin Cox; Jul 21st, 2018 at 00:05. Yesterday's job was to replace the wrong spring that I'd fitted last week to get through the MOT.
I need to get some boots for the Nivomats, I suppose universal motorbike fork boots would do the job. I also transferred the 55 profile tyres across from my old 850 because they ride better and I prefer the look. Today I fitted a new fitting kit to the back brakes because the rattling was doing my head in.

Finally got around to sorting out the courtesy light microswitches on the offside door lock mechanisms with the aid of christheancient's useful guide. I've been putting the job off for years in the end it wasn't too bad at all. Hopefully this will sort out the occasional flat battery caused by the little red marker lights in the door staying on unseen.
I was amazed how good the condition of the inside of the doors were. Apart from some dust it could have just left the factory. Pretty good for a twenty year old car! Many years ago I had a 122S and recall the window winder mechanism collapsing in a sea of rust and that was considerably younger. Put a solar panel in the cab yesterday at about 11am, connected directly to the battery using croc clips.
What a great way of keeping the battery topped up.....at least it would have been if I'd not decided the best place for the panel was on the folded down glove box...................forgot to take the bulb out of the glove box light....which I noticed at four o'clock this morning.........better dig out the battery charger again!

The odometer failed when I was filling up. Luckily I had a spare gear available so I changed it when I got home. I managed to break the rev counter when I was putting it back together so it all had to come out again and it got gauges from a spare panel.
All fixed now though, and only 8.8 miles lost.
