Just noticed today while giving a clean around the engine that the rod for the swirl flap is just hanging loose on the motor end. I've had a look into the engine and can see a corresponding lug that it needs to attach too but the lug moves very easy forward and back. Is this normal or something broken inside?

Cheers Dave

I'll attach it back today but looking through this thread it might not last!

I've not had the car long and it's probably never been attached but I can't feel anything wrong with the way it drives. I'll see if it makes any difference after it's back on.

Attached it back on but how do I know if its actually working? Is there a way see the actual arm moving?

When I turn the engine off I can here a noise coming from the actuator but no movement.

Smile when it operates

Hi steve,

It only moves (calibrates with full movement to end of free movement), once every 5 startup / switch off cycles ie just turning the ignition switch / key off to pos 2 x5 cycles will not let you see it calibrate, have a go, if the stepper is working you should see / hear it trying to move, this info is probably repeated hundreds of posts ago, seems to be a very popular thread , must start a poll to see whos D5 swirl arm hasnt fallen off yet ..

Default Swirl flaps or stepper motor?

Great thread with some ingenious ideas for fixes. I have similar issues on my xc90 but also with the motor itself. Got a massive power loss which I'm investigating. When I start the car I think the stepper arm moves and when I rev gently the arm moves too. However, if I hold revs about 2000rpm, the stepper arm moves back down and doesn't hold position?

I have spent two days now researching this damn swirl flap/arm problem. Plastic parts won`t work here. But there is a German guy who made it out from metal. Expensive, but still affordable.
