well if the belt is timed correctly ( how was the bottom crankshaft pulley lined up ? ) and it turns over with no tight spots then there is nothing lost in trying it , take the 5 glow plugs out so it doesnt start and eliminated compression , if it turns freely with no binding and no knock sounds then give it a go .. there could be a slim chance .

Just tried turning it with new tensioner on and I would say there is most definitely 'tight spots'.
Guess the head is coming off now then

In my mind there wouldn't be tight spots? The valves have bounced and the pistons have made space for themselves, I'd put it all together and turn the key now, its not going to get any more damaged if its timed correctly

It didn't really feel too good at all when I was turning it actually.
It would go so far and then become really quite tight, but then if you let off the pressure and put it back on again it would turn. Sounds strange but thats the best way I can describe it . When I tried this before I thought it was maybe just the way the belt was running on the knackered tensioner, but the new one on now made no difference.
Anyhow, I have bitten the bullet and started to strip the head off. Coolant drained, airbox out, engine mount off etc.
Is it really necessary to drain the oil though? Surely it will all be in the sump anyway?

I would try and fire it up rather than take it to bits as you won't do any more damage than already in there (if any). The difficulty to turn it over by hand that becomes easier if left for a bit could simply be good cylinder compression which on an oil burner will be quite high thus difficult to turn by hand. As the compression leaks past the valves and piston rings (given a little time) it will become easier to turn until the next piston starts to build up pressure where the cycle repeats itself 2,5 times per revolution of the engine - Mike

Turn the key with your right hand, cross your fingers on your left hand, look to the east and hope for the best ! Seriously though you have nothing to loose now, if its damaged its damaged and the head will need removing , IF by luck its ok then youve saved yourself a hell of a lot of work and have a running car again.

Totally agree. Probably no need to refill the cooling system either at this stage if you are just firing it up to see if it will run.

I am intrigued with this and wish you luck. Let us know how you get on.

Absolutely nothing to loose and potentially a lot to gain

Well, this morning I took out the glow plugs, as per Clans instructions, and turned the key.........
And it actually sounded fine to me
So now I have put it all back together and will fire it up shortly.
