Default Volvo S40 2011-2013 clutch master cyclinder recall

Hi all, I received a lovely letter of Volvo today stating that my car need a recall for the clutch master cyclinder because of the internals being made from plastic rather than metal, anyways cut a long winded letter short I need to take it back to the dealer.

Previously to this letter mine actually failed over a year ago and I had to have the cyclinder, clutch and flywheel changed costing me over £1500 including labour.

So do any of you guys know where I stand as for compensation? Because it was clearly there fault I had to get all of this changed because when I received the new parts of the dealership I did get a new shape clutch master cyclinder.

Was the work carried out by a dealer? If you can prove your clutch failed due to the same reason as the recall I would say you have a pretty strong case for compensation.

why was the master cylinder changed previously with the clutch? They are two independent items both cant fail at the same time ??? In fact i have never known a master cylinder to fail on a S40/V50/C30/C70 The recall is to change the plastic push rod master cylinder for a metal push rod master cylinder , the push rod can break apparently ..

A perforated slave cylinder could / would contaminate the clutch plate forcing a replacement. Certainly no one would change the slave cylinder without putting a new plate whilst it's all apart.

Not sure about the flywheel - that might be pushing your luck (even though it's an utterly stupid design from the outset).

As you say the Master is normally a reliable item, I have never changed a modern one.

I've just re-read what you said and like Clan say's the part that fails on recall is on the bulkhead and not really in contact with the clutch, DMF and slave cylinder. What actually failed on your car to mean you had to change it?
The usual process for a failed clutch is to replace the clutch, DMF and slave cylinder but none of which should fail due to the master cylinder rod snapping as the recall states.
