Super nice 122 shifter conversion
im new to this board but i thought i would share this super slick shifter conversion with you, and as i used to be a volvo parts man i came up with it myself : ) we all know the shifters in 122's leave alot to be desired right. i was taking apart a 1967 123GT that had been wrecked and i was putting all the parts in my 68 122 like rear end overdrive recaro seat brackets ect. i saw a top cover off a 1974 140 in the parts room ant thought wow that would be nice, so going to the part films i saw that the raised tunnel in a 1974 140 was a seperate part mounted above the transmission tunnel. i ordered the tunnel piece the 74 shifter and shift boot. now this part may no longer be available from a volvo dealer but is pretty easy to cut out of a donar car, you have to cut out your 122 tunnel to allow the remote shifter to fit up into the body, then you install the 74 140 tunnel piece either with weatherstrip seals and pop rivets or it can actally be welded in, the top cover i got had a place for the overdrive lock out switch and i had the original overdrive switch relay and light from the 123GT, that car has long since gone down the road but i currently have a really nice 1966 2 door with all of the GT parts in it and we later realized that because my 122 has a headlight dipper switch on the floor there is an un used contact on the turn signal switch that works really nice as the momentary switch for the overdrive, and you can get an original looking od light off a 1800. Just some neat volvo stuff i thought you might like. ohh by the way this car has the 1974 140 shifter conversion as well.

Many thanks - very useful info! The remote shifter is something that I've been thinking about for a while, as then there would be space for a proper centre console (the shift of the long gearlever doesn't bother me - it's still more precise than most modern cars that I've driven).
Isn't that for flashing the headlights, or is there another contact in there?

not sure if english and US cars were the same
on my car therewas no headlight flashing function hooked up, and the high beam dipper is on the floor. so we used the front to back contact on the turn signal switch and a headlight relay off of a 140 to operate the overdrive.

Shifter confirmation.
yes that is one of the M41 transmissions with a 140 type top cover and shifter, there are several types including a later one that has a rubber vibration dampner built in. you need to cut an opening in your stock 122 tunnel to allow the remote shifter to fit up into the body of the car. then you install the raised tunnel section out of a 1974 140 model car and we have installed it with a weatherstrip material and pop rivets and also in a car with no interior yet we welded it in. i had owned an old volvo specialty shop in the past and have done this conversion no less than a dozen times.the tunnel piece has the fasteners to accept the 140 shift boots with stock clips. this conversion places the short throw shifter in a much closer very comfortable position, and when done nicely like my car after carpet its all volvo and looks completely like it was stock. and by the wat this shifter conversion can be done to 4 speed cars as well it just seems that we usually did it when installing overdive transmissions in 122's .
