Angry whats it worth

Dear Amazondean, firstly my original question was what it is worth, some how it has turned into it is for sale. And going by the suggestions of others on the forum, I would not let you or anyone else near it, especially with such comments and sarcasm. I know what has gone into this car, and to answer what somebody asked, when it was sanded down to primer level, it was commented by the body shop how good the body was for its age. I really didnt think that this wa going to turn into an argument. I would love to see your car, the one you must of spent £20,000 on, so I could turn up with a magnet, and test every body panel, and light up every nook and cranny with my torch. Its like someone finishing their house on best buget they could, and then you turning up to the proud home owners house and saying, " yeh but that porch doorway doesnt look very straight". Do you understand what I am trying to say here. I hope others agree, but quite frankly I dont care. As said before, I have been on this forum for years, and have had so much help from so many people, which I am so thankful for, and which the restoration would never have been completed.

C'mon if it's not for sale then it doesn't matter what others think it is worth.

I think you've done a great job on the car. I am quite pleased with my efforts too. However, when i look at the lengths that some will go to to ensure that everything is perfect or 'better than new' i have come to the conclusion that my car will never cut it with the big boys.

At the end of the day we are all justified in feeling very proud of our cars - after all they should have been dead a long time ago - if they weren't Volvos

Jimmyjam, i am not sure what you are upto but in your last reply you stated "some how it has turned into it is for sale". Your very first blog was stating if anyone could say what its worth as i am thinking of selling, so that implies you may sell, but now someone has questioned you it's not!!

I have done a bit of homework and realised that i have tried to help you in the past regarding some problems you have encountered. Infact the more i delved the more i have realised that you seemed to have had no idea what you were doing regarding this restoration. I know this can be the case for many of us and we have to try to solve problems and at the end of it we learn so much. However you wanted a valuation on the possibility of selling. I am trying to give you that. I have many years experience on the matter. As i had an interest in buying i am going to try to find out more information. When the question of value was mensioned earlier you said that you were looking for considerably more than £7000. So to me the car should be top notch. Instead after very little communication it has turned into "the best i could manage on a budget" If you state to me that you are looking for top money i expect a top car. When infact i now believe it not to be the case, not because i am guessing but on evidence that i have gathered.

When reading all your past problems that you have encountered there was many things that rang alarm bells. The most serious is that when, after you hastily stripped the car down and then consequentely had it rebuilt and painted you then realised that the cross member under the radiator was badley rotten and that you didn't know weather this was part of the radiator or the car!! This was after the restoration was complete and painted. This part of the car is one of the most common areas and you missed it when it was starring you in the face. What else did you gloss over, or should isay filled over. There have been many other problems like your doors not lining up and it was pointed out to you that maybe the rear wings had not been welded in while the doors were on to make sure they lined up. You also mensioned about using other parts that may fit the car that were from a british layland car because they were cheaper, infact the word cheaper often cropped up in your blogs. You never mensioned weather these problems were sorted and if so how you got round them. All you are realy after is praise for your work. Infact you give me the impression that you need praise all the time to make yourself feel better.

This forum is not just about praising people up for there work but being informative and discussing volvo related issues. when it involves the possibility of actualy selling, then it becomes serious as someone is going to hand over a very large sum of money.

I have been slightly branded as someone who has been disrespectfull to Jimmyjam when it is more likely that it is the other way round simply because i started to try to establish a valuation on true condition, although i take no offence. From the evidence i have collected i think you are trying to say the car is better than it actualy is, basing it on your valuation of in excess of £7000. There is nothing wrong with this as it is up to the buyer to prove otherwise. I have to try to prove this because i was interested in buying and also trying to help out other people who cannot see through shiny paint. An earlier blog stated to be suspicious of all buyers but realy the only thing to worry about regarding a buyer is weather that person steals the car. The buyer has to be the one to be suspicious of the seller in many ways, and a very skilled person to flush out all the possible problems that the seller is trying to hope you don't notice, which is all part of buying and selling but i am too long in the tooth for all that shiny paint nonsense.

Whatever you do just don't invite Gordon Hunter, one of the most respected members of the 1800 club to look at your car as he will be using a magnet and torch although i suspect you would be worried what he might tell you. Just like he did to mine when he turned up. I had full respect for the guy and he was incredibly thorough.By the time he had finished and took pictures of all the areas of concern for the potential purchaser there was a list that filled an A4 sheet. I realised imediately that we were both on the same wave length. Consequently the purchaser baught my car without even looking at it because he had full confidence in Gordons ability. Do not try to shame people with skill, as they will pull you apart if need be.

Christ, this one's a bit close to the bone isn't it?

I've mulled this one over a bit and here's my three p.

Okay. Now I'm confused as well Jimmy. You post up a thread asking 'How much should I sell my 1800 for' and then get offended when people ask if it is for sale. Not sure what kind of reaction you were expecting other than what people think it would be worth.

Second, I'm sure you weren't expecting the comments Dean came out with. Fine, it bleeding well sucks reading things like that about your pride and joy (you really don't want to know about some of the things I heard people say about my Amazon at Cholmondeley), and I suspect you are like me, more of a dreamer than a realist. I see brass where there's muck and to hell with what anyone else will say, even if they know more than me.

Please note that I am not saying that your car is no good. Far from it. It looks like a very good, if not exceptional example of an early 1800. I took issue with how Dean chose to comment on your car, rather than what he said. Now he has backed his words up I can get a clearer picture of things.

Personally I would not go at a seller saying what he said (i.e. that you've skimped on things). I would at first look at what was in front of me, and if my skills were not up to it I would get an expert's opinion. If you want an unbiased and true opinion of what an old Volvo needs (and correspondingly, how much it is worth) then I stand by my recommendation of Gordon Hunter. He will be frank with you in the nicest way possible. I notice Dean agrees with me on this.

I think the problem Dean was the way in which you went about it. I admit that Jimmy's pictures were not the best, but I would be asking (privately) for pictures of potentially cobby areas before declaring to all and sundry on a public forum that a member's car is not all that it seems. Nobody likes to be called a liar in the presence of friends and well wishers.

In all honesty your sentiments on all cars are the correct ones Dean, I just can't abide people who are short on decorum. I appreciate that such comments may stem from experience and objectivity, and even though cars are business at the end of the day they are also a very emotive subject.
I was smarting a bit from the comments some the sniffier attendees of Cholmondely had to say about my 120, and with those words ringing acerbically in my ears I stepped in and spewed forth.

Jimmy, calm down and try to take comments constructively. I know how hard it is to be told something you've splurged on isn't worth what you think it is.
Get the car valued by Gordon and take things from there.

I have always been lead (sic) to believe that the use of leadloading highlighted quality and attention to detail. Difficult time getting said magnetic to stick or at least with the same 'pull' as the surrounding bodywork.

gentlemen, thanks for your support, you have said what I am trying to say, but have helped me say it. I think Dean, I am not offended by constructive comments, and you sound very experienced in your field. But I feel as a previous poster has said, you are trying to humiliate people and more or less calling people (me) a liar. Can I just say, that I knew nothing about mechanics, or restoration and this has been my ony one. So please dont treat me as if this is something I do all the time, and this is my 5th car I am on. I know what I have done to the car from respray to having the carbs cleaned and balanced by Burlen fule systems. And please, before you mention..."ah he said he hasnt restored a car before, that must make the car even worse"!!, anything that I cound do myself, ie: re wiring, exhaust system, engine, fluid changes etc etc I have done myself, otherwise I have always taken it to Volvo specialist Tony Barrett, for repairs, MOT or servicing. Please do not say things like, " I have looked over previous posts, and that they are ameteur questions" which some how gives you the right to belittle the other persons ability and achievements. I really dont wish to talk about filler, torches or British Leyland lights any more. I have had enough. I really wish I didnt even bring anything up. For all of those who have understood where I was coming from, I thank you from my heart. I know Gordon Hunter fairly well, and I would welcome his constructive comments any day, when required. Now please can we drop this one, and I appologise if I have rocked the boat in any way. Thanks all. Jimmy

So are you selling the 1800 or not?

Testing the water for valuation will always bring unpleasant questions to the surface, along with the more positive aspects.

Do what I do. Calm down about it and come back again in a new frame of mind. I can tell you're upset about it all but selling \ valuing a car like yours is not straightforward. The worst thing you can do is take it all personally because you won't learn from it. I am terrible for this.

Jimmy, i had no intention to try to belittle you or offend you in any way. My first post clearly stated that i had some concerns about some of the work that has been done and it seems to have escalated. But ultimately you did state that you were looking for in excess of £7000 for it and that means to me that the car should meet certain standards. As the posts started to roll i had to explain why i had those concerns. I realise that i have offended you and can see this in your replies as you have often made mistakes in what you have quoted me of saying. I feel that i have said far more than maybe i should have, only because it has offended you but i'm afraid you keep posting mistakes which makes me feel like having the need to reply. In your last reply you have quoted me several times, but i did not say what you have quoted me of saying. However i also realise that i have wound you up so i take no offence.

Ultimately i needed to express my view of the car openly because someone on hear just might buy the said car because twenty or so forum members may have commented how fantastic the car is without any experience of noing any different, so i felt the need to actualy question certain areas of the car and now maybe people will have a more open opinion of it.

Hopefully This will now be my last post on the matter, so to answer your first post on valuation i am going to give my valuation based on the evidence i have collected without seeing the car to prove otherwise:

I believe the true valuation is around £5000. This may seem low but to me that is about right trying to sell to anyone in the know. However most people are not in the know, so on that basis you would probably achieve £7000 for it, simply because it is in good order and a recent rebuild to a desent standard. If you try to ask more than that you are heading into the teritory of real perfectionists which actualy i am not, who may start pulling it to pieces in front of your eyes. And lets face it if you are asking top money you are expecting a top car that has been restored to a very high standard.

All the best and hopefully you will keep it as only you will realise the true effort that has gone into putting this car back on the road

hi great looking car suggest listing on e bay many buyers do check this site on a regular basis and it is a good way to obtain a true market value.dont listen to the so called experts comments just list it with pictures of the engine bay i would be amazed if it did not reach 8,000 plus regards Paul . ps would bid over 7 myself good luck
