Pete:
Mrs F's 940 made precisely the same noise. Braking and at times accelerating. Check the steering rack end ball joints. Turn onto full lock (stationary): hand inside wheel arch whilst trusty assistant gently turns wheel a very small amount backwards and forwards: critical to make sure wives comprehend they must turn the wheel sufficiently to reach the point of resistance, in order the joint is thrust-loaded. (Obviously, engine off). Check both sides. |

This was quite a while ago - I remember most of the knocking being solved after simply re-assembling the lower arms/rods with a healthy amount of torque on the bolts.

I had mystery clonk that turned out to be the ring that holds the shock in the strut had unwound a bit. Pulling on the shaft (oooooer) with weight on the wheel showed how slack it was, as it moved from side to side.
I had replaced a lot of suspension before that finally came to light!

I have found the issue.
The inner steering rod is bad. I can make it knock by hand. I read online the replacement is a pain. https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/fo...ic.php?t=31568 Also are there more then 1 type? This looks like a pain in the ass to sort out. What's up with my bushes? Brand new and not sitting correctly? |

Inner track rod ends then? Might be easiest to source a secondhand rack and just change it complete.
https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=287440 As for your bushes, which ones are you referring to? I can only see the ARB bushes including the droop link bushes, the eyelet bushes on the drop link looks a bit odd but don't forget that wheel is at full droop so most strain will be on it as i daresay the other front wheel is still on the ground, looking at the photo.

Yes, there are 4 types of rack across the 700/900 series. The track rod inner/rack threads do vary on some of these and some do have flats, others don't. |

There's nothing to worry about here - they are supposed to look like that at the extremes of suspension travel. As the wheel and lower arms move downwards relative to the rest of the vehicle when it is jacked-up, the drop link and the very end of the anti-roll bar (where eyelet is) move further away from their normal alignment of being approximately perpendicular. This is what "Laird Scooby" meant by wheel droop.

Thanks everyone.
Just found out from the service history it's had a steering rack replacement years back so I guess I need to get under the car. |
